I'm Malaysian, here visiting relatives for holidays. I'd like to say that there is something deeply unsettling about Singapore.

While it is truly a first world country, it feels very off. My Singaporean wife won't shut up about the good things about Singapore, how life is good here and that there are a lot of amenities, but it doesn't feel good at all.

It's hard to explain but I feel like Singapore as a country is a gigantic tourist trap where everyone works hard to give good impression to foreigners without being able to enjoy that dream for themselves.

It's a great country, definitely better than Malaysia in a lot of aspect but it just feels lacking in freedom and happiness.

Its quite different staying here. It's nice if you're taking a vacation but the average Singaporean is working. It's just a culture I guess. There's generally one goal, which is get a good job, a good house and start a family. But I do know what you're talking about. In quite a few people there's this sullen atmosphere. In the best case this rat race produces excellent, skilled people who are good at their work. In many cases just over stressed lower to middle class people.

Jelly of Malaysia sometimes. Seeing people just sitting in the fields on plastic chair fanning themselves. I love the kelong.

Its a fine political point which most westerners wouldn't believe but because something is true doesn't mean it should be said. Of course they should say it's a religion of peace. Then they get the religious leaders on board, who are controlled with a firm hand, to make it their stance. Imams are very respected in Islam. Then those people keep their people in check. The few who say otherwise are quickly ostracized and caught.

And because something is theoretically true doesn't mean it's practically true. Theoretically the Old Testament says any child who disobeys their parents should be killed. Practically most malays don't feel like waging jihad for the sake of Islam.

Most people who go through it like it. It's fun in a gritty way. If you go through the captain route for example they'll send you to Indonesia/Brunei for 3 nights with water purification tablets, matches and a knife. You make your way to the checkpoint with a compass and a map and hunt what you eat. It's something you'll never do again.
