Slavery was absolutely central to the Confederacy's position in the Civil War in the same way that taxation was a central issue to the Colonists during the Revolutionary War.

The questions of the ideological focus of the Civil War is a win/win gambit:

Option A: The Civil War was fought over slavery.
Implication: 365,000+ White Americans gave their lives to free blacks, and the United States, and White Americans are righteous and to which black Americans owe their infinite gratitude.

Option B: The Civil War wasn't about slavery.
Implication: There can be no special condemnation for the Confederate political cause. The South was no more inherently immoral or racist than the North, and there is nothing inherently racist about the Confederacy, or Confederate culture and imagery, any more than Union culture and imagery.

The reasoning black people have for their hatres toward whites is that yeah white people might have fought to end slavery, but white people were the ones who enslaved them in the first place.
