I do welding, particularly working class Americans tend to think of this way because of how we categorize sports stats. It's just an easily understandable way to communicate in Amerienglish. I don't like it either but it works for us, we do have the second best welders in the world, pretty much barring only Sweden--and the Swedes are only really good at TIG, which is the cursive of welding anyway.
