they sink the boats. Then you have to, under international law, rescue the people in the water. Once on board a military ship, they are allowed to utter the word "asylum". You then, again under international law, need to process their asylum request, also allowing appeals.

Italy's justice system is so bad, it takes 4yrs at a minimum for an initial ruling on asylum. Italy also fails to intern asylum seekers on islands, which means they move on to Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France and the UK.

The problem in all of this is A. not handing Libya money to deal with the problem and B. not interning the asylum seekers on islands where they cannot move on.

Easy. The Italian government could demand from the NGO that they verify there was no closer option to bring the migrants to. But the NGOs already claim that there is no closer safe harbor. Also, it is debatable whether the closer safe harbor rule allows Italy to block NGOs from entering Italian harbors.

Or in other words, the Italian government doesn't want to risk a PR disaster with poor kids being filmed by the NGOs on ships in the heat waiting to enter an Italian harbor. Libya was among the richest countries in the Arab world before it was bombed. It still got a shitton of oil and gas.

We can build it up again and then buy their oil and gas for cheap. Plus, no more illegals from there.
