Friendly reminder that the Holocaust is indirectly the Union's fault, that Confederate victory would've prevented the entire chain of events that led to it, and that we must ram this fact down the Eternal Unionist's throat with the same vitriolic intensity that they do with slavery.

And Robert E. Lee saw himself as a Virginian not a Confederate. What's your point? Many of the very people who supported and fought in the Texas Revolution also supported secession. The only major unionist being Sam Houston but he was being more practical than sympathetic to Lincoln. Kinda pathetic you're spitting on the memory of brave Texans who fought for freedom alongside their Dixie brethren. It's fine to be a Texan nationalist but you just make yourself look bad shitting on an important part of Texas's legacy.

Not even Sherman was egotistical enough spout such nonsense. He always thought Grant was equal.
If he could took take a look his fanbase (if you can call it that) today, he'd probably be so horrified at the lot of you that he'd either declare he was wrong and commit seppuku or change into a gray uniform.

They also think Sherman was some demon who hated the south when he lived in the south a long time and befriended many southerners. In his personal letters he mourned meeting his former friends on the battlefield and part of his reasoning for burning Atlanta and the march to the sea was to get the Confederacy to surrender so he wouldn't have to kill anymore.

Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War by Charles Flood is really good and is mostly about Sherman and Grant, however it has a bend towards Sherman, and discusses how Sherman's ability to chart his own path with military decisions was successful in the long run. Pours some scorn on Grant's military ability desu.
The Destructive War: William Tecumseh Sherman, Stonewall Jackson, and the Americans is about how both Sherman and Jackson essentially carried their respective sides, and discusses the effects of Jackson's death on future Confederate martial ability, and the effects of Sherman's march.
>>131470588
>Just remember what happened last time you had a chimpout
You had your teeth kicked in by a foe inferior in literally every way for four years and only narrowly beat him. And this was back when Yankees were actually manly. I remember one story where he stopped in to see a friend from his Louisiana days. The friends wife was home but the friend had died at 1st Bull Run. When Sherman (who didnt know about the death) asked the widow how her husband was doing she burst into tears and said he (Sherman) had killed him at Bull Run. Sherman protested saying that hadnt killed anyone at Manassas, which was technically true. Then he left.

>>131471457

>>131471261

McClellan was scared of getting anyone killed during battles so he always lacked the initiative when he carried the day and never pressed on, thus allowing Confederates to always regroup.
In his memoirs he talks about how he didn't want to waste anyone's lives, however it quite ironic since his lack of gall to press on probably extended the war and got more people killed.
>>131471457
If you liked the Burns documentary, read the three volume history of the war by Shelby Foote. It is fantastic.
>>131471084
My great-great-great grandfather was in a Union regiment that got orders from Sherman so they sent him back a message that basically told him they didn't have to do shit for him since only Andrew Johnson could order them (which was true). Sherman was pretty irritated over that. That humors me a bit. Especially since they didn't mind orders from other Union generals.
>>131471266
And Dixie exploits Texas more than the union how? A major complaint Texans had that caused secession was the union wanted things from Texas yet couldn't even offer to send some army protection against Mexicans and Native Americans.
>>131468467

Yet where did that lead Texas with the false promises The South made? Backwards as we got hit with the shitty reconstruction. The only great part about it is that with such a large state, we didn't get look into as heavily and able to progress much better then the rest of those faggot states that started it all.
>>131471565
the economic side is interesting too, its just a series of blunders and bumblefucks as the confederate government lets thousands of tonnes of cotton rot in port to drive up prices and pressure the euros (who then turned to the ottomans for cheaper cotton) and sends diplomats who get captured
the military was really the most competent thing about the south and they had a whole year of straight victories as lee stomped mcclellan for being indecisive like >>131471599 mentions

This is true, at least in ohio. The appalachian migration from wwii-1980s has changed the region. I feel like a foreigner in my own land. The second and third generations still have their accent and they are intent on changing these new areas into the hit hole hill towns they left in Harlan County.

I beg to differ on your opinion of his March to the sea. I could write a book on the vile things he did to innocents. Within 5 miles of my house they killed an 11 y/o girl & dug up graves looking for gold wedding bands. Not far from here they hung slaves to their death, because they refused to tell them where the master's good was hidden. Those stories, and two hundred more. Fuck Sherman.

yeah, I believe he was pro-copperhead for a long time. One of the reasons Lincoln cucked him of his generalship was because he supported that senator in Indiana who went around trying to rally anti-war democrats in the north.
Even though im a northerner who is very pro-union I have to admit the south had better generalship overall. Stonewall Jackson was probably the best, also Forrest was very talented in his innovative cavalry tactics. Luckily we had Sherman and Stonewall died ayy lmao.
>>131471976
Texas was hardly even attacked during the war and had nowhere near the development of the rest of Dixie or the northern states. The fuck are you bitching about? There was nowhere near as much to reconstruct in Texas in the first place and even after the war was an extremely popular place for people looking for a new home plus the discovery of oil. If anything Texas got off very light compared to Dixie who contributed more and got hurt more yet we still give Texas their fair credit and seat at the table.
>>131471980
I was jsut thinking about the cotton embargo today. I think, if I wer in their position, I might have done the same thing. Hindsight is 20/20. the sotuh had to be bold because the juggernaught of the north just had to grind it out. The south had the leaders to match the boldness. The embargo and invasions of the North (kentcky, maryland, PA) were long shots but the gamble was justifiable and perhaps worth the risk.

I'm a WV fag here, not gonna pretend to be Dixie but I hear stronger accents here in the mountains and down in southern WV than I did on the several occasions I visited Virginia or had Virginians visit me. What's up with that?

1st half of Southern Victory is pretty good, second half is shit though and I'm not saying that just because I'm a dixieboo. It makes no sense that Germany, the USA, CSA, and Great Britain would be able to develop atomic bombs independently of each other when it took a coalition of nations years to just build one. Also pretty nonsensical that the Freedom Party would think killing 1/3rd of the CS population would be in any way feasible. Oppress 'em? Sure, but slaughtering them wholesale is beyond strategically unsound.
Turtle was also originally make McSweeney into Hitler and have him gas the Mormons (which would've made more sense since the Mormons are like the Jews a widely despised tiny minority, unlike blacks who have sufficient numbers to resist).
>>131472851
McClellan was an odd dude. How can you be such an indecisive general? Grant was a drunk, Sherman was (admittedly) crazy, Hooker spent too much time at the whore house. Not to mention Lincoln was a Homosexual. God, they were a mess.

>>131472681
Can I ask what you do for a living? In undergrad I did a semester of independent study on exploring how the Civil War is portrayed in film. I'd love to go back and do an MA or something, but I don't know how I'd justify it to myself.
So I am thinking of starting a Civil War blog and focusing it on some of the minor, lesser-discussed issues of the war. Things like some human interest stories, raids, individual soldiers, towns. Basically how the smaller aspects fit into the larger experience of the War. It wont be on battlefields or other things that have been done to death.
It will have pictures of places Ive visited on some of my travels. Is this something you think epople would want to read or is this gay as fuck and autistic? It will be neutral and academic in nature, even though I am a northerner it wont have the "Rebs are racist traitors" stuff.
>>131472721

>>131473231
took over a year for lincoln to replace him too
although to be honest, the string of victories lee had against mcclellan made him overconfident, he never should've invaded the north

It's almost forgotten that Johnston was killed, because it's never been talked about much. It was a huge blow.
>>131472977
I know what Reconstruction is but you haven't given any real argument to how Texas got fucked over by it. If anything Texas did pretty damn great between cattle and oil and the building of universities after the war. Not to mention after the war is when your governor encouraged eastern investments which is partly why Texas is what it is today. So what during that era fucked Texas over? Or do you just think it's thanks to those damn dirty southerners you're not in flying pickup trucks living in golden mansions with no less than 21 Texas flags flying.
>>131473391

McClellan was a twat, but I'm also somewhat sympathetic. He did a great job building and preparing the AotP. Some historians argue that he was very fond of the army he built and didn't want to see it destroyed, others argue that his newfound popularity would erode if he lost. Either way, he didn't have the stomach to be a battlefield commander.

Guns of the South is a wonderful book, and it would make a great movie except it would make Hollywood liberals blow a gasket, especially if it was actually well-made and got Oscar nominations.
I'm still unironically waiting on a sequel set in the 20th Century where technological development has progressed significantly faster thanks to President Lee.

>Some historians argue that he was very fond of the army he built and didn't want to see it destroyed, others argue that his newfound popularity would erode if he lost. Either way, he didn't have the stomach to be a battlefield commander.
"“General, soldiering has one great trap: to be a good soldier you must love the army. To be a good commander, you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love. We do not fear our own death you and I. But there comes a time... We are never quite prepared for so many to die. Oh, we do expect the occasional empty chair. A salute to fallen comrades. But this war goes on and on and the men die and the price gets ever higher. We are prepared to lose some of us, but we are never prepared to lose all of us. And there is the great trap General. When you attack, you must hold nothing back. You must commit yourself totally.”

I think I will. Thanks.
I need to think of a title though. I want to pick something from a Civil War era song that is not too 'in your face' (like I wont call it the "Battle Cry of Freedom") but also has something poignant to it. That is my biggest hold up so far. I will probably start it in July or august.

The Civil War is one of those things where you can see what society thinks based on their interpretation of it. Its like a barometer for the cultural zeitgeist. I am very confident those involved were well aware of this--especially Lincoln and Davis.
I didnt see the movie but the previews were made to accentuate the modern sjw bullcrap so I assumed thats what it was.
I collect antique Confederate history books. I bought two of Douglas Southall Freeman's sets tonight. Spent too much money. It's been my collecting addiction here of late ever since that kid shot-up that Church. I knew it the moment I heard the news, that book burnings were soon to happen, and I started buying the oldest & best books I could find. I had a random & semi-decent collection of books before, but in the last two years I've collected well over 100 antique books. I'm addicted to preserving history.

Seeing this quote from McClellan to his wife is what convinced me that he was a twat.
>I find myself in a new and strange position here—Presdent, Cabinet, General Scott & all deferring to me—by some strange operation of magic I seem to have become the power of the land. ... I almost think that were I to win some small success now I could become Dictator or anything else that might please me—but nothing of that kind would please me—therefore I won't be Dictator. Admirable self-denial!

It's a Southern state but suprisingly many east Tennesseans were Unionists. where did you move from? and what part of tn?
>>131475140
East TN was unionist while West TN was (mostly) pro-Confederate. Middle TN was a blend of the two. Our most famous general of the period is easily Nathan Bedford Forrest but we did also provide the much less stellar Andrew Johnson. Shiloh was one of our biggest battles.

Lincoln himself wrote McClellan saying he had great reservations about allowing him to take command of the Union Army specifically because he thought McClellan might entertain the idea of a coup.

>On June 17, 1831, the Best Friend earned a rather grisly first — it became the first locomotive in the US to suffer a boiler explosion. The blast is said to have been caused by the fireman tying down the steam pressure release valve; he had tired of listening to it whistle, so to stop the noise he closed the valve permanently (another account has the fireman placing a stout piece of lumber on the safety valve and sitting on it). Another reason may have been the fireman was trying to overpressure the boiler as the locomotive was expected to perform hard work i.e. climbing a gradient upon setting off. This was common practice and a common cause of boiler bursts until a tamper-proof safety valve was produced. The blocked valve caused the pressure within the boiler to exceed its capacity, and it exploded.[1] The resulting blast was said to have hurled metal fragments over a wide area and killed the fireman. The locomotive's engineer Nicholas Darrell was uninjured in the explosion.
