Simple answer is tribalism has forced them into a leftist dead zone - too liberal for the "mainstream" moderates that largely voted for Obama in '12 but Trump in '16, but too conservative for the gay pride tranny apologists on the lunatic fringe to entertain (the few that did vote Obama just stayed home in November)

If the democrats want to not be reduced to literal Green Party levels of representation in the midterms, they need to cut off the loonies and appeal to the moderates who backed trump more for lack of a better option that Shitllary Clinton. The House is locked res for the next 30 years because of the map, but if they can force at least three senate seats (unlikely as only 8 republicans are even up for re-election) then there's a chance.
