The Dems are going to be torn apart between Progressives/Socialists and Corporatists/Neoliberals. There is no way that the Left-Wing of the Democratic Party is going to be a silent partner after Clinton's loss. The Socialists are young, desperate, and educated, and outnumber the corporatists in their own party. Whoever wins the nomination of the Democratic Party, the Party will only be operating at 2/3rds strength because of the irrevocable divide between itself. I honestly don't know how they are going to swing 2020, as you brought up some very apt points. However, they will be pushing Kamala Harris. It'll be interesting to see how they do it, though.

What happens in America also happens up here with the Liberals in Canada. The American Democratic party and the Canadian Liberal party work very closely together. Information is shared between them, and this year the Canadian and American elections are quite close. 2019 to try and get Trudeau back in, 2020 to get and get Kamala Harris in. These two will work with leaders like Macron and Merkel to try and swing the liberal agenda back into the forefront.

The greatest game changer is if something happens to the economy during Trump's term. If QE fails, whether by design or not, the world as we know it will come to an end. At first, it would seem like it would be the end of Trump. But upon closer examination, it would also mean a critical blow to Globalism/Corporatism as well. Entitlement programs may become unaffordable. Stocks may collapse never to recover. The nation becomes even further radicalized between the two sides. If the economy remains stable during this era, or only suffers from a minor correction, then the world becomes stable and on course. But a real economic crash would signal the end of a political era for everyone; Republicans, Neoliberals, and Socialists.

Very hard to say. IF the economy crashes like it did in 2008 AND the economic recovery measures by Neoliberals fail to work, here's my conservative take.

There is a specific faction of people, that we don't have a modern term for, that used to be popular between the years 1932-1980, that I coin "Modernists/Technocrats," but were informally known as New Dealers. This is a faction that was primarily focused on achieving economic growth and national reform above all else, especially for the working classes, rather than necessarily distributing entitlement programs (Socialists) or increasing Corporate profits (Neoliberals.) They are a dormant faction in politics, in that they tend to lean socially conservative but economically liberal, and constitute about ~22% of the US population. They are prominently powerful in East Asia, however, and are the de facto governing block in places like China or Vietnam. Without the ability to distribute entitlement programs, and without the corporate sector's ability to generate profits, they will emerge relatively unopposed on their front.

On the Right, we can expect to see the return of Fascistic politics in its true form. Fascism involves taking the weakest/different of society and removing them from the population for the greater whole. So rather than attempt to lower the cost of healthcare, the Fascist simply euthnasizes the poor and the ill. Problem solved. I can easily see the Republican party turning more and more indistinguishable from pol and the nationalists.

Then it could get even uglier if a prolonged collapse continues to occur. The more outlandish scenarios include a Yugoslavia-type scenario where the US literally breaks apart into ethnic infighting. There is a prominent prophecy I subscribe to that the US will fall apart in this scenario. The US fails to reform, turns on itself in ethnic conflict, and ends up like the Turner Diaries.

Keep in mind this assumes that there is a significant economic crash, which means that the economy has to collapse totally first. People will literally be unpaid to do their job, which means they won't do it all in the first place.

In my younger years, I used to be sure that I knew the future. But now, I'm just saying this is my best guess based on comparative politics and history in general. So this could not come to pass. The premise of the economy collapsing isn't even known. But if it does, these are the kinds of things I think about.

The economy has slowed down when the price of oil crashed and OPEC kept on pumping out more and more; however by 2019 the oil prices will swing up over a $100 a barrel allowing the American economy to go back into a boom. The reemergence of American manufacturing plants will allow for a slow decrease in unemployment and Trump keeping America out of Syria guarantees a smaller debt burden on the government. Hell because of this I'd even go out and say that Trump would win the 2020 popular vote and slowly become more neo-con with his second term playing out like George Bush Sr.'s. The right wing's greatest strength has been its appearance of being more economically minded, and during times of economic highs people are more willing to keep the ruling party around (especially one that labels itself as being good with business).
