We get high speed internet from Comcast, which we got for a promotional price when we moved into this place. It was $50 a month for a year. We don't have even the most basic cable, because we don't watch TV (and no Netflix, in case you were wondering).
Next month the promotional price would end and our current setup would cost $80. Comcast called today to say we are eligible for another promotion: $54 dollars a month for the same internet AND basic cable! They'll send a box over right away. If we don't want the basic cable, it'll cost $80 a month.
They could have not called at all and gotten $312 more out of us a year. Why are they willing to make less off of us and technically give us more to ensure we have basic cable in our home? Oh, and it includes HBO.

But it's so blatant...

Well for one thing, any promotional offer you accept includes a binding contract. Once this new promotion ends in a year the price will double and your still locked for 2 more years. Once the contract is about to expire they will call you again with a fantastic unbeatable promotion.
It works everytime
T. Former Verizon call center rep, it's all the same scam

That's what I thought too, but they said it was for a one year contract. I'm guessing that they might be counting on people not wanting to return the box and just saying 'whatever, we'll keep the cable, what's your price.'
Though what you're saying definitely happens a lot, too.

The Rep is working on commissions.
