Americans made Iran what it is today. That is the real reason they hate it like almost no other country. Americans don't like to fail. Nobody does but the American isn't used to it (yet). They had already a puppet Monarch installed after dismantling the democratically elected leader of Iran but just couldn't stop pushing the Persians into the western mindset. But you can't interchange a religion this deeply rooted in a culture and replace it with capitalism and "social freedom". That's why they revolted and got rid of the influence and went straight back to the extremes of their religion and heritage. It's what Europeans should have done but since the culture they would have to revert back to was condemned literal evil it never happened.

The Shah was a critical ally and we didn't back him with the Jimmy Carter/CIA program to energize radical Islam was going on. Letting the Iranian state police go apeshit on political opponents turned the tide.
