Actually it's just a layer of painted plaster. If you go there you can see the exposed Byzantine art underneath. It's done in mosaic stone and as such remains pretty intact.
Of course you need to get rid of the Islamic wallpaper first. Which shouldn't be a problem since their religion has no qualms about paving over historical sites in Mecca to make a hotel and shopping mall for tourists.
