That includes Tatars (the blob of Islam in the middle of Russia), but also the Turkic (Kazakh) and Persian (i.e. Tajik) peoples of Central Asia, and various peoples of the Caucasus (for example Chechens, but not only)

Those are distinct ethnic groups that have been, over time, integrated into the diverse ethno-religious makeup of the Russian Empire, then the Soviet Union, and now Russia.
