Because our culture sees the elderly as a liability instead of a wise person. I don't think it was always this way but (((someone))) might have influenced the change. Remember that this mostly happens in (((urban))) areas in the west whereas in the rural areas it's more than likely to find 3+ genenerations living in the same house.
