I have a weird pathology where I find an inferior outgroup, then beat myself up over the fact I'll never be part of it despite being part of a superior group.

Example: I'm incredibly paranoid that if I moved to Canada, Australia or NZ, even if I was there for the rest of my life, get citizenship and renounce my British citizenship, if I was to refer to myself as "Canadian/Australian/Kiwi" someone would eventually say "No, you're not one of us, you're English, you were born in England.", and most of my early-life experiences until my late-20s would diverge from that of a native-citizen as well (even one with Chinese ancestry), so they'd have something of a point.

Now here's the thing: I don't want to be any of those things. I like living in England and I regard being English as the best possible result of the dice-roll of life. But the fact I can't choose to be part of their ingroups bothers me to an unreasonable degree.

(It's not just nationality, it applies across a range of things. Nationality is just a good example because it steers clear of many of my other pathologies when I explain it.)

I don't think he's wrong. I'm a cop in the US (raised on an AFB in the UK, which is why I'm here) but what he describes I can mostly attribute to how people perceive us, the things we experience, what we're told, and what people want.

A lot of people are in the habit of saying "cops aren't special, they need to realize they are just doing jobs like us" which is incredibly wrong.

You see, we do jobs like you, yes, but the issue is that I am tasked to carry a gun and protect you. How I do this is mostly up to me save for some guidelines, but for the most part when I'm on patrol I am on my own and make my own decisions. A cop that's "just doing his job" will pull people over, write tickets, go to calls, arrest people, and the like. He will do whatever he has to do to collect his paycheck. This is somehow "good."

Cops like me, on the other hand, who live and breathe police work, take the oath to the consituation as seriously as a heart attack. What that means is that every fucking stop I make, I am trying to make the city safer. If I think a warning will do that, I give a warning. If I think am arrest will do that, I make am arrest. If I think giving someone a ride home will do that, I'll do it. I will make my own decisions and do my canned best to protect and serve the people in my jurisdiction, even if that means arresting or exposing crooked cops, even if that means refusing to make an arrest, even if that means to defy every order made by a superior. I believe in what I do, to the point where I'm basically a zealot.

I've been shot at, stabbed, beaten, hit by a car, and everything else under the sun, and I can tell you I will never stop showing up to work because I legitimately believe that this is my higher calling, and as shitty as this job is there is nothing else I want to do besides make my community safer.

Coming back to the question: What it sounds like to me is that the individuality of British cops has been beaten out to the point where they are just wanting to collect paychecks, afraid of taking a firm stand on anything, or that they are legitimately believing that they are making their communities "safer" by interfering in basic freedoms. It's wrong, and a lot of these cops that "just work a job" are to blame because they refuse to stand up for what is right.

Tl;dr: policing is politicized and broken due to shitty recruitment methods and supervisors beating down legitimately good cops into cookie cutter shapes.
