http://www.pulseheadlines.com/professor-disagrees-with-elon-musks-mars-colonization-plans/64560/

>Fiala believes humanity can’t leave Earth before solving the environmental problems here

>That led Fiala to discuss another important aspect of Musk’s colonization plans: the cost. Fiala and many other experts believe that probably only the upper class of society will have the opportunity to visit –or colonize- the Red Planet.

>The professor ultimately believes that Mars colonization may only be a luxury that few people can enjoy

I think rich people will be hesitant to initially colonize Mars. More likely, the ultra-rich are going to begin sponsoring groups of settlers. These lower incomes aliens will pay back their enormous loans with a life of servitude, creating vast wealth for their merchant Earth overlords by exporting rare minerals from the Martian mines.

>Fiala believes humanity can’t leave Earth before solving the environmental problems here
So never?
>>
>>131200172
Also, the point about everything Elon Musk is doing is reducing costs.
Sure, first it'll be expensive, but it'll eventually get lower.
What we can't do is sit here doing absolutely nothing, and no, the enviroment can't be fixed because fucking no one has the balls to do what would be necessary.
Oh yeah, you reuse a bunch of plastic bags, I can already feel the CO2 getting snuffed out of the atmosphere.

Well, CO2 is plant food and we could actually use more of it. It would severely increase plant yields. And climate models that panic-mongers use are BS. CO2 is jack shit as far a rise in average temperatures go.
>>
>>131200172
>Fiala believes humanity can’t leave Earth before solving the environmental problems here

I don't see how that would create problems with going to Mars?
>>
>>131200608
I'm not saying Musk will be able to colonize Mars, but I do believe that one day humans will at the very least attempt to colonize other planets. When that happens, I have no doubt that a new type of interplanetary sharecropping system will develop.
>>
There are no environmental problems on Earth.

And of course only the rich will go to Mars. The rich are our best of the best.

It's probably the other way around.. learning to terraform, to bring a dead world to life, will teach us how to heal the wounds and repair the damage we've done to our own earth.

However humans cannot realistically live on any other planets long term except Venus (if it could ever be cooled and made livable) because of gravity.

What we need to do is build large orbiting stations creating gravity with centrifugal force and rotation and send sorties and work teams to a planets surface to mine, survey and terraform, and then return after a few weeks/months. Crews could be rotated in this fashion so they never had too much exposure to low gravity.

Another problem with Mars, and many other world as well is regolith. Regolith is sand or soil that's been eroded by cosmic rays into super microscopic grains, sharp and jagged little fuckers that will definitely cause mesothelioma if you breathe in enough of them. That will be a real danger for the future of space exploration.

The truth is we needs useful idiots like Musk.. he has more money than sense, but his heart is in the right place

Aside from the temperature, it's also the pressure caused by such a dense atmosphere, it's 90 times the pressure in the surface of Earth.
Either you find a way to literally snuff out the atmosphere, or just make a floating city.

>>131202290
AND DO THE OTHER THINGS NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE EASY
>>
>>131202016
It's also the same mass as earth.. if we had the technology to use mass drivers to hurl comets at it for a few hundred years we might be able to cool it and add enough hydrogen to stabilize it's atmosphere. The real problem is it's rotation and lack of a magnetic field, which I suspect may actually be related. If we can get it rotating properly again with such repeated impacts, its magnetic field might be restored.

It is possible to make Venus into a second earth and it's probably more feasible than making Mars into a livable planet, however it would take scifi technology that is probably a thousand years away if it's even possible

Yeah that seems fine.

The way I see space travel is not that we'll get there with a dark drive or whatever but to think of it as being in a moving fallout shelter not just your life but multiple generations of mankind.

Obviously the logistics, supplies and maintenc3 would be huge. In my mind, all of humanities resources will need to be scooped up in these massive ships.

Literally boom or bust. Dooming and remaining earthlings left behind (so Africa basiclly, maybe just launch from there? The blast off would be so large it would help kill a majority of the continent as we leave...)

I'm all for space colonization. Just think of the abundance of resources in for example the asteroid belt. Everything will be eventually figured out.
In fact, there's only two problems with the alcubierre drive, one, the energy it would need, and the other shielding the ship.
The moment the drive makes the ship reaches speeds faster than light, everything in the warp bubble will start to heat up inmensly.

>Fiala believes humanity can’t leave Earth before solving the environmental problems here
>believe
not an argument
If they are so worried about the planet dying, wouldnt it make sense to have 2 planets instead of a single one just in case one dies? Earth could potentially become one big conservation park if we get off Earth in a powerful enough way. Will that make the greenies happy?

>That led Fiala to discuss another important aspect of Musk’s colonization plans: the cost. Fiala and many other experts believe that probably only the upper class of society will have the opportunity to visit –or colonize- the Red Planet.
Not with guys like musk working on it. They are always looking to get price down. Plus, do they think that the colonization is going to be one big rich person party?

>The professor ultimately believes that Mars colonization may only be a luxury that few people can enjoy
>what is downward price pressure

Plus, thinking that we need to evolve ethically before moving out is putting the cart before the horse. Colonization in the past has catapulted various cultures forward in the past.

Three stars. Two in the center of the system orbiting "each other" (alpha and beta), and a third (proxima) far away which orbits the two like it was a planet.
Proxima also has a planet of it's own. Pretty cool system.

This is fucking retarded. I mean, I think that Musk is scamming people out of their money and that you can forget about mars colonization being possible.

By his logic, the USA wouldn't even exist today
>Hurr durr, we must not search for the new world until we fix Europe first
>>
>>131205126
No, the only thing you need for Mars is to fix it's magnetic field, since the atmosphere doesn't do a good job at stopping solar radiation, and it can't retain heat properly either.
You would need to literally build a moon-sized magnet and put it in Mars' orbit, and then the atmosphere would heal on its own.

Teacher got pissed and tried to argue "So your pro war!"
>In western countries, the birth rate was beginning to reduce itself, yet governments claim this is a bad thing meanwhile bringing in replacement populations while leaving the origin population unchecked.
Professor became more pissed, and started getting called a racist, so I stood up and shouted.
>HOW WOULD ANY OF YOU IN HERE STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF EARTH! DO YOU THINK RECYCLING AND FOSSIL FUELS ARE THE ONLY SOURCE OF THE ISSUE!
More pissed, but a few silent.
>If we go to Mars, and reduce the human population here, we will be able to begin reverting the damage to the Earth, meanwhile, the human population of Mars will have no choice but to live a cleaner life style because they are on a environmentally friendly planet.
>The only way to save the Earth, and the human population itself, is to go into space and reduce our numbers manually, its either that or we could have another World War and thin out the herd.
Teacher called me jaded and sad.
>Your just wishing for a miracle to happen when you are the soul cause of it by turning a blind eye to the root issue. Its us, not the food we eat, not the clothing we wear, not where we live, but humans innate urge to breed, and their innate urge to enslave others.

Mars' mantle alone is 50km thick. That's aside from the fact that you'd still have to pass through 2,100km of other crap before reaching the core, and that "nuking the core" is some bullshit that was inspired from a low budget Aaron Eckhart movie.

We should try and colonize other planets asap, not Mars necessarily but yeah, the biggest contributor to every environmental and social issue in modern times is largely due to population density. Moving some to a new planet would be a lot more ethical than doing some Georgia Guidestones shit. Or hell put each group with differences on different planets fuck it.

Oh, they are. I watched a lot of flat earther shit and if you think they are trolling, thats only because you are projecting your level of intelligence and expertise on everyone and expect everyone to follow the same path of though you do. But its not like that. Some people are really retarded, and when you see a catch, a lie, they just take it at face value. And if they watch like 200 flat earth videos and listen to all the "arguments" repeated again and again, they become like a bot, repeating all the words from those videos.

Does this person not know what happened with colonization in the past? Not everyone that settled in North America from Europe was a rich aristocrat and hundreds of years later people can mostly move freely with fairly low (and at least comparatively much less) cost. It'll be the same with space travel. Once we lay the foundation for doing it (assuming that happens) in the later years of this millennium it should be fairly easy similar to flying or other forms of terrestrial transportation now.

Of course tons of things could go wrong that could keep this from happening but there's no reason not to try. Poor people now won't benefit from it of course but you should be thinking long term.

This is the dumbest shit ever, and I'm surprised to hear it repeated by a professor. We didn't intentionally ruin Earth, we had no fucking idea CO2 would fuck things up, and when we finally realized it, it was too late to just radically decrease production. We are pretty much just victims of our circumstances. Mars barely has an atmosphere, and the soil contains poisonous chemicals. The only way we could ruin it was if we scattered nuclear waste all over its surface for no fucking reason.

There is no economic value in colonising Mars. Cars allow for fast travel and deluvery, same with Panama canal - they have a big economic impact.

Mars is purely a "because we can" type of deal. Just scientific curiosity n shit. Mars by itself will yield like 0 of the good shit points to the humanity. Related research in interplanetary travel might, but still unlikely .
>>
>>131209485
Yeah, terraforming is sort of a meme.

But building a self-sustaining colony isn't, and when you built on Mars it doesn't have to be 100% efficient because you can always condense more air, fertilize more soil and dig more ore. You build a colony, you grow, you prosper, you build another colony. If you're really good at it in a millennium maybe the entire planet is one fuckhuge space station.

Living on Mars would be terrible unless the atmosphere could be made breathable and the entire planet could be terraformed to have trees, plants, rich soil, rivers, ponds, lakes and/or oceans.

You'd be indoors all day, everyday. No nature. No trees. No rain. No ocean.

And the awareness of being so far away from home, knowing how long the journey back would be, would be very unsettling.

They can have fun trapped on Mars getting weaker and going mad while we're doing backflips into lakes and body surfing the ocean waves at the beach here on Earth.

So what? Things can't happen off screen on the ISS? Or is it weird to people reacting to that?

It's probably not compression artifacts. But that definitely has nothing to do with green screens either. Both "events" happen in front of the people, not in the background which you claim is green screened.
Also, try to find a video which clearly is green screened that shows the same artifacts. Sadly enough i've watched enough tv to never have seen such an artifact occurrence. Seems more like lag. Given that there streaming this from a space station occam's razor would imply a shitty connection.

And again, i don't see anything odd about the microphone. C'mon man. If this all was actually fake... why would they even cgi in a fucking microphone? Or use a cheap ass green screen for that matter. Even better, why would they even go through all that fucking trouble in the first place? You actually think they'd fake something that's actually well within mankind's ability to do (we have THOUSANDS off satellites flying in orbit) just to fuck with you? Or to convince us space is real?

I'm not arguing against Mars colonies either.

Mars has 1/3 The gravity of Earth. People who colonize there will suffer from muscular dystrophy. And anyone born on Mars won't be able to travel to earth because they developed in the Martian gravity.
It's fucking pointless to colonize mars period. Colonize Venus, similar gravity, already have technology to shield heat, unlimited source of solar and geothermal energy. Just build the cities in the clouds so the pressure doesn't kill us.
