Not yet! That's my main issue with the current left wing.

Automation requires capitalism to grow and results in socialism, its simply idiots looking three generations ahead forget it is the present.

Mass automation will be the death of illegal immigration, so I'm all for it. Once all the low skill jobs from fast food to fruit picking are handled by machines, there will be nothing left for low-skill foreigners and no way for libshits to justify bringing in more of them because all the "jobs Americans don't want to do" will be automated.
>>
>Once all the low skill jobs from fast food to fruit picking are handled by machines

We are heading down a path were more and more jobs will be automated, and it won't just be low skilled, shitty jobs

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/dec/22/bridgewater-associates-ai-artificial-intelligence-management

Management jobs are in the early stages of being affected. Immigration wont have much to do with it, they might just be some of the first to lose jobs but it will happen to a lot of people in time

A good one from recent times comes to mind "Where have all the good men gone" tier posts.

It's not going to happen. For three reasons:
1) People avoid machines like ticket machines.
2) There are more than enough alternatives everywhere.
3) Over 90% of the people here pay cash. Those machines would have to accept cash, and that means they'd be broken into in the night by Turks looking for cash.

It's not coming.

Putting the order together can be automated as well. And will be soon enough.

The Beer industry already has fully automated warehouses. Automated picking of product. Automated filling of the trucks. The only thing you need are drivers and some admin folks.

And they are working on automating the drivers as well.

If you are low skilled or no skilled, you are going to die with no job and no healthcare. That's just a fact.
>>

Second, this is good. Humans were not made to spend 40 hours a week in a greasy kitchen making "food" for minimal pay, from a multi billion dollar company.

Raise wages in agriculture/field work and all low skill American workers can work in the fields, rather than exploiting migrants. More productive than flipping burgers and better for health and the economy.

I live in a pretty big metropolitan area, and I haven't seen a single pay terminal yet. At least not at McDonalds.

They have them at Ikea, and they have them at Real, which is sort of like a Walmart with more class and higher prices here. There is never a line, because over 90% of the people here pay cash. There always has to be an attendant at the self checkout counters, because people can't deal with machines. They get frustrated, and they need help with operating the terminals.

So the only "saving" you get is have one attendant watch about three of four self checkout counters.

Seeing how these things aren't popular with customers and having a huge reservoir of low skilled people that are made to work after two years of unemployment benefits, I don't thing pay terminals are the future.

The concern over automation is a symptom of the public school system. The low skill job of the future is grunt level coding and IT maintenance. Public schooling being in it's own bubble has no market feedback through which to update it's curriculum so you have inconsistent distribution in curricula that are consistent with market demand. Some schools have a good admin that has pushed the school towards the current market and many others that continue to operate as if they are preparing students to work in the industry of the 1950s and 60s.

I agree

Over here we have this thing called Walmart and on either end of the cashier lanes they have automated checkout lanes.

Some people go for them because they only have a few items and its quick...

But in my experience people tend to want a human cashier and are willing to wait for another customer to get checked out in line.

The reason why I prefer actual cashiers is because when I go through the self-checkouts they almost always have some kind of problem. They're either offline, or they get confused, or they dont accurately scan some special deal (marked down bakery goods) - and I have to nag the supervisor to come over and fix the price on it or delete it off the list.

I also like to pay with Cash and its a bitch & 1/2 to pay cash into an automatic machine. Im frequently worried that it'll eat a $10 or $20 and then they wont believe me.

They still havent gotten that figured out yet, where you can just dump a handful of money into a tray and then the machine accurately counts all of it and sorts it. We're still using this antiquated vending machine shit where you have to insert one bill at a time (and often one Coin at a time just so it doesnt get confused).

In many places here in London, the McDonalds' get so busy that even if they doubled their staff they couldn't possibly meet speed quotas. >>
>>131163889
This is progess. These machines make it way faster and easier for me to get my slop.
>>
>>131167836
This, and I have two more concerns to add:

Cash terminals here have been tampered with by the thousands. Thieves break in at night and manipulate them. Since nothing is stolen, those break ins aren't reported to police. Months later customers notice thousands of Euros missing from their bank accounts. Turns out thieves manipulated the teller machines to send them the card numbers AND authentication code for each transaction. They then print their own blanco bank cards and withdraw money at ATMs in Romania with the authentication codes they stole.

Second, I like to keep a "feel" for the money I earned with hard work. I see and feel it being spent. I'm not sure the same thing would happen to me, but as a friend of mine got used to paying with cards, he was always overdrawing his bank account. He just had no feeling for how much money he had spent.

Automated checkouts is like The Fifth Element and iRobot kinda shit.

Like many years from now after AI actually gets gud and they have all these technical defects sorted out... it can THEN be easily applied to things like retail service. But at that point you could literally put a robot there to greet people too.

Until they get it down Just Right there's no way that it'll be effective.

In some cases it may work just because "there's no other alternative among stores, so you'll just have to deal with it" and thats going to piss people off, but they'll still have to do that.

But anything smaller than Walmart, things like fast food, unless they all start doing it right away its a Self-Nerf because people will start going to other places.

Besides Fast Food... you know... the reason its fast is because MOST people who buy fast food do it through the DRIVE THRU.

And there will ALWAYS be a human server at the drive thru because of a million fucking reasons. And if they aren't actually handing the food to the customer they'll still be employed to watch the camera and press buttons.

One possibility this may lead to is fast food restaurants eliminating their indoors dining areas or making them limited.

However thats just going to spur growth on higher end fast food restaurants starting up that "provide that older aesthetic experience" and all they'll have to do to kill the big chains is provide a single low end item like a cheeseburger - and people will go there because it'll actually taste better.

Automated Servers/Cashiers is a SELF NERF
>>
>>131163889
they are not replacing cashiers, just make it so they dont need to press in orders and handle payments.

Instead the cashiers can focus on bringing/making the food quicker.

Ill second this.
It means better service TBQ honest.

We pay them 15 bucks an hour, and the store puts in automated cashiers. But they'd probably only drop 1 or 2 people.

The rest would still be there to either watch what the customers are doing... bus tables/floors and be more attentive to customers... and help with fixing and bringing the food up.

> and the servers/cashiers would actually need to have Less customer service skills since they wouldnt be talking to the public in the same context as over-the-register

They could be doing this NOW, but it goes to show you how lazy the restaurant chains are. That an increase in minimum wage is what it'll take to force them to adapt.

As in all Western countries, I expect there are customer marketing studies here. Teller machines have been around in a few big businesses for a few years here, and they are just not popular. So I don't expect other businesses to copy that mistake.

Here, we don't have something like a single Walmart per town. Maybe large stores like Ikea are unique, but for all other stores, there's always an alternative the customer will move to if shopping gets uncomfortable in a shop.

/pol/ really is as retarded as reddit on this topic. automation will not end employment. people said the same thing about industrialization, and while we don't have things like seamstresses, milkmen or shoemakers anymore, entirely new industries were created to sell factory mass produced items. mcdonalds locations that have these kiosks offer table service now, a job that didn't exist before, they might expand into delivery next. work will never end for the common person, the entire capitalist machine would collapse if it did, and the people in charge have no interest in that.

Tenets of a viable 21st century conservatism

1. The fundamental assumptions of Western civilization are valid.

2. Peaceful social being is preferable to isolation and to war. In consequence, it justly and rightly demands some sacrifice of individual impulse and idiosyncrasy.

3. Hierarchies of competence are desirable and should be promoted.

4. Borders are reasonable. Likewise, limits on immigration are reasonable. Furthermore, it should not be assumed that citizens of societies that have not evolved functional individual-rights predicated polities will hold values in keeping with such polities.
5. People should be paid so that they are able and willing to perform socially useful and desirable duties.

6. Citizens have the inalienable right to benefit from the result of their own honest labor.

7. It is more noble to teach young people about responsibilities than about rights.

8. It is better to do what everyone has always done, unless you have some extraordinarily valid reason to do otherwise.

9. Radical change should be viewed with suspicion, particularly in a time of radical change.

10. The government, local and distal, should leave people to their own devices as much as possible.

11. Intact heterosexual two-parent families constitute the necessary bedrock for a stable polity.

12. We should judge our political system in comparison to other actual political systems and not to hypothetical utopias.

They are fucking pointless.
Lines still form because old people are too retarded to use them and take too long. They are still hiring employees only now they are paid to guide people on how to use the machines rather than on operating the register.

There is an upside though... I noticed at my local McDonald's all the uggos have been replaced with pretty girls, which makes sense since offering advice on how to use a touchscreen is easier than operating a register 24/7 so they can afford the luxury of hiring eye candy.

> The folks with education and skills are fine.

that's why degrees are hyper inflated and you're exchanging 20,000+ in debt for a piece of paper that will only really tell people that you've gotten the bare minimum of education in an over saturated field?

then i guess those educated folks will have to get another degree and keep rinsing and repeating to make sure they're always qualified for their field better than their competition?

well stick my ass on a farm and call me toby, i'd rather just make a lot of money by working hard than take out a bunch of loans for a meme degree.

I think automation can only be a good thing for everybody, in the long term

It sucks if your job is being replaced by a robot, and you have to find a new one yes, but as more and more things get automated, the cost of these services should be dropping right? They don't have to pay employees so McDonald's food will be cheaper.

Now you might say that McDonald's will just cut employees but keep the same price, and pocket the extra profit, but if Burger King then implemented the robots, and they cut their prices to undercut McDonald's, McDonald's will be forced to cut prices as well

The end result of mass automation should be a reduction in the cost of living all around right?

but what about the poor unskilled workers with no jobs that can't be done better by a robot? I think once the cost of living is low enough, you'll see rich people start paying unskilled people just to not make a mess like a dirty homeless person

They'll pay them just to be out of the way and not cause trouble. Unskilled people will get their television and their low cost apartment and their McDonald's coupons and be happy, and everybody with something to offer society will still have a normal job

the problem is not automation, or capitalism. The problem is with the average level of human intelligence. Blacks are a perfect example of this, prior to the 60s, labor participation rate for blacks were on par with whites, the reason why this was is because the economy provided a ton of options for individuals with an 85 IQ. This is also the reason why the nuclear black family structure was much better back then too, the father could actually provide a stable home for his family.

Fast forward to the present, and now huge chunks of the black community are plagued with dysfunction and one of the major reasons for that is that we have an economy that provides little to no options for an individual with an 85 IQ, but, however, rewards the shit out of individuals with an IQ of 120+. This same observation is starting to seen occurring to whites. At some point we're going to have to start coming up with solutions on how to raise the standard IQ of all races in America or we're going to have a big balance problem on our hands.

They replaced 3 human registers with 2 of these and 1 human register.

> Unskilled people will get their television and their low cost apartment and their McDonald's coupons and be happy
I am doubtful this will make people happy. You can argue this is already starting to happen in some places where factories have closed and now everyone left is on the government dole. People have cheap shitty housing that's been lived in for generations, government assisted food and health care, but they are living in misery, debilitating poverty, broken families, drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, and declining lifespans. And it keeps getting worse and worse.

People need more than their basic material needs met to be happy. That's why government welfare can't fix broken communities. Individuals need some feeling that they are contributing meaningfully to the community they belong to and are valued in some way, or else alienation sets in.

Humanity being phased out for Machines. All part of the Trans-Humanist & "Globalist Endgame" plan.

Eventually large portions of the populations would be eliminated(Eugenics and/or Bioweapons) because they would no longer be needed.

This is the problem with welfare. Before, if the low skill people couldn't find money for food they either died or worked to become higher skilled workers. Now all they have to do is sit on their lazy asses and whine they can't find a job and have no money and are going to starve (sent from my iPhone 7) and the government will shovel money from productive citizens checks into the their pockets.

I commend automation. Unskilled niggers can either go out and acquire skills or they can fuck off.

Nobody in this industry deserves $15 an hour.

Unfortunately this will probably mean more niggers on gov assistance. Always a catch I suppose.

>Management jobs are in the early stages of being affected.

Yeah that's a good thing. You ever worked a government job? You got managers for managers. You have someone who literally manages someone who manages someone who manages 3 people.

What do these people (women/blacks/LGBT) do all day? Sit at their desks and play games, text, eat.

That's what they do.

Management is a diversity position.

Management does not have deadlines.
Management does not produce a good or service.
Management does not keep a company running.

Their one job is to fire someone who isn't doing their job, and most of the time, management will not fire someone who isn't doing their job because management isn't doing THEIR job either.

I can never work at a government or corporate job again in my life. I simply cannot stand people who don't do work, then have to PRETEND they care about the work being done by OTHER people.

Oops, my higher ups just set a deadline, better go pretend to be anxious about the deadline to the people who ACTUALLY do the work. Then after that I'll go sit back down at my desk, send a few texts, then head out to lunch. Wew, being a manager isn't easy! hehe! I'm not the one who has to complete work by the deadline, but hey deadlines sure are stressful!

FUCKING KILL YOURSELF YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF HUMAN WASTE.
>>
>>131183836
I disagree, there is still relatively the same amount of unskilled work if not more so. The problem is that our labor participation rate is higher than ever.

>A good 1/3 of the workforce is women
>People above the age of 60 still actively participate
>Immigration and outsourcing has created a ghost labor pool for companies

The larger problem is that wages have depressed to reflect the ideal of everyone being a wage earner rather than mostly men between 18-50 in a local area.

I honestly see for unskilled labor this balancing out because of the "New Yorkification" of the west. Tons of package deliverers, petty work, security, etc.

>I'm willing to pay higher rent for a doorman to receive my laundry, groceries, Amazon nonsense, etc
>So, more appartment complexes higher doorman because of all these places doing delivery

This. Reminder that in most Japanese chains the only thing that isn't fully automated yet is the food prep.
>>
>>131185368
>A good 1/3 of the workforce is women

Sorry to burst your bubble but women are a majority. 52%.

What do they do? Management.

What is management? A diversity hire who does not do actual work and is not expected to.

>>
>>131183836
actually the problem with blacks is that our government started paying black single mothers more than what a black guy could make on his own.

women see this as an easy choice:
>Care about Jamal, do what Jamal wants, rely on Jamal for a roof over your head and food in your stomach, aka play life by Jamal's rules
or
>Have sex with anyone you want, have as many babies as you can, get paid for it, and all you have to do is vote democrat, live by your own rules

Gee tough choice for black women. Black men? They don't really have a say in the matter. They're unwanted in their own households. Single mothers get more money from welfare than two-parent families or even homes with an adult male living in them. As a mother, you can get more money by kicking the father of your children out of your home.
>>
>>131186901
>Work for shittier and shittier pay so I can keep my job
Yeah, if you don't have skills to offer an employer, then you're at the mercy of your employer, if you can even get one.

>Lose my job because I demand a decent wage.
Yeah. Someone will always be willing to do your job at the price you're getting. There are millions on unemployment. There are millions of illegal workers in our country. And a computer wouldn't mind doing what you're doing.

Probably do a better job than you do anyway. lol

To put it simply. Automation is inevitable.
Workers have been replaced by machines through history. And it will continue. And continue. And continue.

You don't have a birth right for a job. Nobody is responsible to provide you with work. You may sell your time to someone willing to pay you for for your service. And you must leave once they don't need you.
>>
>>131163889
As a software engineer I say that low skill jobs should replaced by machines. The more of life we can automate the better, people losing jobs is just a side affect.

I'd rather have a job done well than by a human.
