What would be other way to decrease people's time preference, than old-line religiosity like example medieval-like Catholicism or Puritanism? How to make people care enough about world without build in fear of punishment, present even if nobody is looking? Humans are just animals, embracing some abstract idea nationalism or scientific, isn't enough to totally mobilize individual, if he doesn't feel it is immanent. Original Nazism has power to drive its followers to action, because it was almost cult, but today's "white-power" movements are nothing like that. Someone who finds own ideology funny (you know "memes") isn't true believer.
