An asshole today is caught in an impossible position where he has to project strength and dominance . Otherwise, he risks being mocked as an irrelevant faggot. But if his peers decide he has crossed an invisible, constantly shifting boundary and has become 'too much of an asshole' he loses all credibility. Even if he was coerced into becoming an asshole, his identity and reputation are taken from him. Indeed, the power to tell his own story and be himself is wrested from him.
