They are not seen directly, they are inferred by the dimming of the light of its star once the planet positions itself between us and its star.

They can only find planets that whose orbit is exactly between their star and us, but since there are gorillions of stars, there are enugh planets with this type of orbit.

Different methods of determination. We can tell if another sun has planets by looking to see if it dims or wobbles back and forth. We can tell what the planets are made of when they pass infront of the star and we can see how the light is distorted and rayified passinbg around the planet.
