The Lord's prayer.
What a magnificent gift to us. Unlike so many prayers and formulas given to us throughout the history of the Church, it is the only one given to us from the mouth of Christ himself.
Occuring in a passage in which Christ demands simplicity and humility in prayer, this prayer could be considered the perfect prayer.
Its importance is acknowledged by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states that it is "the summary of the whole Gospel". And indeed every Christian of every denomination across the entire world revers these words. It is one of the few unifying elements that brings all Christians together. As children, we are taught to recite the prayer off by heart.

We, of course, have a tendency to recite the prayer without considering the weight and meaning behind every line. And what a lot of people don't realize is that within this prayer contains one of the great mysteries of the faith. A mystery that has perplexed scholars and doctors since the days of the early Church. This mystery lies within the line Matthew 6:11. "Give us this day, our daily bread". This familiar and seemingly innocuous line is what caused such controversy, and to understand why, you need to go back to the original Gospels, written in second century era Koine Greek.

The adjective that describes the bread, what has been translated as "daily" from the original Koine Greek texts of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, is "epiousios". And "epiousios" is an unusual word for the Evangelists to use because of it's rarity. It is so rare, in fact, that across the entire corpus of all ancient Greek literature ever written, the word is known to only have ever been used twice. Once in the Gospel of Matthew, and once in the Gospel of Luke. Both in the context of the Lord's prayer. And this presents a problem. We understand the meaning of words by how they are used in various contexts. But we don't have that with "epiousios". So scholars can never fully be sure of what the word means.

The Lord's prayer. The one prayer given to us by the Son of God himself, what many consider to be a summary of the faith, contains a mysterious word that no one can be fully certain concerning it's meaning.
"Epiousios".
The word mystified scholars for centuries. Even the great Christian scholar Origen, who was a native Greek speaker and lived a mere century and a half after the Gospels were written could not recognize the word, nor be fully sure of its meaning.
All scholars can do is look at the word, compare it with similar words, break it down to it's components and try to ascertain the meaning that way.

In the english speaking world, we know "epiousios" as daily. Using "daily" comes from scholars breaking down the word into "epi" ("for") and "ousia" ("being", or traditionally, "substance"). So the bread is "for [the day] being" i.e. "daily". While this is plausable and certainly the most recognizable translation into English, a burning question remains. Why use such a rare word, a word that was probably made up, to describe such a mundane concept as "daily"? Especially when a more sensible Greek word like "hemeran"(daily), which actually does occcur numerous times in the Gospels, could have been used?

Despite it being the "standard" translation into English, and the translation we use in our prayers, most scholars consider the word "daily" as being an imperfect and innacurate translation of "epiousios".

So operating on the logic that the writers of the Gospels would not use such an exotic word to describe something mundane, that has led many to a conclusion. On that day, on that mountain where Christ gave that fateful sermon, he uttered a word in whatever language he delivered the sermon in, whether it was in Hebrew or his native Aramaic, that has no equivilant in Greek. And the writers of the Gospels were forced to create a new word in order to convey his teachings. This leads us to the next most common translation.

"Epi" can also be read as "super" or "above", and as noted above, "ousia" can be used to describe the philosophical concept of "substance" or "essence". So it has been argued that the word means something close to "supernatural" or "super-substantial". And indeed, this was the translation favored by St Jerome in his famous translation of the Bible into Latin, known as "The Vulgate", where in Matthew, he uses the word "supersubstantialem"("super-substantial"). However, he must not have been sure about the translation, as evidenced by the fact that he translates the exact same word in the Gospel of Luke as "quotidianum"("daily").

The "super-substantial" interpretation was eagerly embraced by the early Church as they believe it foretells the institution of the Eucharist. The early Church, as well as the modern day Catholic and Orthodox Churches, believe that at the liturgy, the "substance", or the "ousia" of the bread changes in a supernatural process to that of the body of Christ.

This translation is supported as the official translation by the Catholic Church. But as mentioned before, no one is certain of the true meaning. And this translation has been challenged.

The debate continues. Researching "epiousios" online will lead you to many theologians, historians, and armchair scholars all offering information and their own interpretation of the mysterious word. The word and it's appearance in scripture remains one of the most enduring problems of the faith.

It can be frustrating knowing that such an immensely important element of Christianity, the simple prayer we are to utter as commanded by our savior himself, contains a meaning that will remain a mystery to us. But Christianity is a faith full of mysteries.

If anything, it can serve as a reminder that we shouldn't take things at face value, and that we should stop and meditate on all lines of scripture, but especially the Lords prayer, which we have a tendency to mindlessly recite without giving importance and weight to each line.

Next time you recite our Lord's prayer, recognize that each line contains mysteries, and treat them with the same reverance and awe as the enigmatic line that was discussed above.
Accept the mysteries of the faith, mysteries we won't know until the last day, And put faith in God as you petition him for our "daily" bread.

Psalm 30:4, "Sing praise to YHWH, you His godly ones, and give thanks to His holy name."

Sometimes YHWH is shortened to Ya, as in Jesus' name: Yashuah, which means, literally, "YHWH saves."

Of course Christians won't follow any other God but Yahweh. The Quran speaks only of "Allah" and never uses the divine name of the God who revealed himself to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, to all the prophets and kings of Israel, and to the Apostles.

قَالُوا يَا مُوسَىٰ إِنَّا لَن نَّدْخُلَهَا أَبَدًا مَّا دَامُوا فِيهَا ۖ فَاذْهَبْ أَنتَ وَرَبُّكَ فَقَاتِلَا إِنَّا هَاهُنَا قَاعِدُونَ

>[Moses] said, "My Lord, indeed I do not possess except myself and my brother, so part us from the defiantly disobedient people."

قَالَ فَإِنَّهَا مُحَرَّمَةٌ عَلَيْهِمْ ۛ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً ۛ يَتِيهُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ۚ فَلَا تَأْسَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْفَاسِقِينَ

>[Allah] said, "Then indeed, it is forbidden to them for forty years [in which] they will wander throughout the land. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people."

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ابْنَيْ آدَمَ بِالْحَقِّ إِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ الْآخَرِ قَالَ لَأَقْتُلَنَّكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ

>And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah ], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].

>Indeed I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers."


فَطَوَّعَتْ لَهُ نَفْسُهُ قَتْلَ أَخِيهِ فَقَتَلَهُ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ


>And his soul permitted to him the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers.


فَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ غُرَابًا يَبْحَثُ فِي الْأَرْضِ لِيُرِيَهُ كَيْفَ يُوَارِي سَوْءَةَ أَخِيهِ ۚ قَالَ يَا وَيْلَتَا أَعَجَزْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِثْلَ هَٰذَا الْغُرَابِ فَأُوَارِيَ سَوْءَةَ أَخِي ۖ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ النَّادِمِينَ


>Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.


مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَٰلِكَ كَتَبْنَا عَلَىٰ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ أَنَّهُ مَن قَتَلَ نَفْسًا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا ۚ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُنَا بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُم بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فِي الْأَرْضِ لَمُسْرِفُونَ


>Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.

>Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,


إِلَّا الَّذِينَ تَابُوا مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَقْدِرُوا عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ


>Except for those who repent before you. And know that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.


يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَابْتَغُوا إِلَيْهِ الْوَسِيلَةَ وَجَاهِدُوا فِي سَبِيلِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ


>O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means [of nearness] to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed.


إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْ أَنَّ لَهُم مَّا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا وَمِثْلَهُ مَعَهُ لِيَفْتَدُوا بِهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ مَا تُقُبِّلَ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ


>They will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment.


وَالسَّارِقُ وَالسَّارِقَةُ فَاقْطَعُوا أَيْدِيَهُمَا جَزَاءً بِمَا كَسَبَا نَكَالًا مِّنَ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ


>[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.


فَمَن تَابَ مِن بَعْدِ ظُلْمِهِ وَأَصْلَحَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ


>But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, indeed, Allah will turn to him in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

>Let them not grieve you who hasten into disbelief of those who say "We believe" with their mouths but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. Avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you. They distort words beyond their [proper] usages, saying "If you are given this, take it; but if you are not given it, then beware." But he for whom Allah intends fitnah - never will you possess for him a thing against Allah. Those are the ones for whom Allah does not intend to purify their hearts. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.


سَمَّاعُونَ لِلْكَذِبِ أَكَّالُونَ لِلسُّحْتِ ۚ فَإِن جَاءُوكَ فَاحْكُم بَيْنَهُمْ أَوْ أَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ فَلَن يَضُرُّوكَ شَيْئًا ۖ وَإِنْ حَكَمْتَ فَاحْكُم بَيْنَهُم بِالْقِسْطِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ


>Avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful. So if they come to you, judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them - never will they harm you at all. And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

I don't if this helps, but I started by listening to the Bible in my car during my commute every day. I was blown away, starting in the Book of Matthew and going through the entire Bible. I still remember the day I was in my car listening to the final chapter of the Book of Revelation.

Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allah is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

أَفَحُكْمَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَبْغُونَ ۚ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ اللَّهِ حُكْمًا لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ


>Then is it the judgement of [the time of] ignorance they desire? But who is better than Allah in judgement for a people who are certain [in faith].


يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَىٰ أَوْلِيَاءَ ۘ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ


>O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.


فَتَرَى الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ يُسَارِعُونَ فِيهِمْ يَقُولُونَ نَخْشَىٰ أَن تُصِيبَنَا دَائِرَةٌ ۚ فَعَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَأْتِيَ بِالْفَتْحِ أَوْ أَمْرٍ مِّنْ عِندِهِ فَيُصْبِحُوا عَلَىٰ مَا أَسَرُّوا فِي أَنفُسِهِمْ نَادِمِينَ


>So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, "We are afraid a misfortune may strike us." But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful.

>O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion - Allah will bring forth a people He will love and who will love Him humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.


إِنَّمَا وَلِيُّكُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَهُمْ رَاكِعُونَ


>Your ally is none but Allah and those who have believed - those who establish prayer and give zakah


وَمَن يَتَوَلَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَإِنَّ حِزْبَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْغَالِبُونَ

>O you who have believed, take not those who have taken your religion in ridicule and amusement among the ones who were given the Scripture before you nor the disbelievers as allies. And fear Allah, if you should [truly] be believers.

Hey /pol/, /r9k/ here. Hard time finding a church that I can feel comfortable in. It's great to feel like I'm somewhat in church with you guys, without pressure. Anonymity is a blessing. The most Protestant I can join are the Anglicans I guess but my whole beliefs are more Eastern oriented from what I can gather. But if I become Orthodox there would be a lot of issues I have to deal with. It might make marriage difficult and I have to deal with social backlash. It is hard to be religious here in a hedonistic world
