The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is a fun read, too. I've heard some interesting things about the topics Heinlein wrote about across his books, notably about the differing political concepts between his better-known novels.
In essence, the idea is that he was exploring different extremes of political thought. Starship Troopers was his exploration of conservatism. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress was his exploration of Libertarianism. And Stranger in a Strange Land was his exploration of communism.

1984 is a pretty terrifying book imho. not even because of the 'big brother is watching you' stuff, but the way the language is stripped bare and people can't even think about rebellion let alone act it out.
1984, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451, the Great Prophetic Trilogy as I like to call them.

I enjoyed Dune quite a bit. Its a good combination of fantasy and science, the movie was god awful though.

Dunes strongest point is its incorporation of ecology and, to a lesser degree, metabolism/physiology. It also predicted technologies present today. My only real beef is its ending, a little rushed for me

I think that the most important aspect of 1984 is the destruction of the family unit. I am currently only a third of the way through it but that is what sticks out the most to me. Other than that I believe that Brave New World was far more insightful.

I am going to likely finish 1984 this weekend but so far I think Huxley was more accurate than Orwell.

So fantasy?

Everything early-middle Heinlein is terrific. But none of it is epic, he does not have series. AKA, it is pretty much as far away from high fantasy series spanning multiple decades.

General Fiction recommendation. Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Young adult novel about wilderness survival, but I just read it last year and you do not have to be a kid to enjoy it. Read it from a recommendation from TheArtofManlyness.

I read shitloads of ASOIF style fantasy as a kid, but I no longer feel confident that any of them were necessarily any good objectively. If course their is LotRs, and Harry Potter.

I really was not a big fan of this.I don't want to just call it liberal trash, because everything "progressive" in the novel is shown as bad ultimately, sort of. But it is still a slog thorough swamp of degeneracy.

I thought CS Lewis was the most accurate so far with his trilogy ending with That Hideous Strength. There's a lot of soft references to jews and secret societies and it goes full blown christian at the end, which is kind of gay actually. If you're into science fiction it's not to shabby though.
>>
>>131128312
It's funny. The Culture is basically a left-wing post-scarcity utopia. So the background universe is full of facile degenerates who don't really do anything but faff around.

But nearly all of the humans and AI who keep the whole thing together are a completely different breed. It's basically Orwell's quote about people sleeping comfortably while rough men are ready to do violence on their behalf. Banks, lefty that he was, couldn't deny that this was true.
>>
>>131125672
Evola writes from the perspective of someone who's spent his whole life studying ancient history, mythology, and comparative religion, and assumes his readers have the background of a doctoral-level student of these subjects. He presents conclusions which are generally correct, but supports it with only vague references to the Vedas and Greek mystery cults and expects you to know what he's talking about. He has footnotes in "Revolt Against the Modern World" to texts that have never been translated out of the original Sanskrit, for fuck's sake.

James Frazer's "The Golden Bough" is much less concise, being something like 4000 pages long across 12 volumes in its unabridged version, but it presents all of the underlying research to the reader. You can read it having never seen anything about history/myth/occult studies and come out of the book knowing everything about how culture and religion developed.
