I think the issue with the Hitler/Churchill argument is that things are seen in a romanticised way, not in the brutal and unpadded way they actually were. We were an already crumbling Empire, struggling to contain rebellions, faced with the possiblity of the rise of a new German power that could match or even overpower us. To hold on to our Empire we couldn't realistically sit out the war and allow Germany to flourish with Hitler and the helm, we had to demolish it with our last scraps of Empire and energy lest we be faced with the very real possibility of big Germany attacking a small and weak Britain. You can pin the blame on Churchill all you like but the Empire's demise was prescribed a long time before.

That's my game plan. I simply am in no position to affect vast swathes of this country but I can affect my part of it, and so I will. I will do all I can to create a web of relationships that tie my community together, just as how they once were a few decades ago where one looked out for the other. It does not matter if someone's motivations are ill-placed, it is within our capabilities to shift their motivations - what matters is simply that they have a fire in them. Throw a little tinder on the floor and you can guide that fire until it's extinguished.

Well it my bedtime, but I find the idea of Lords to be awesome, and actually would prefer it to be stronger as a counterbalance for any PM.

But that might be coming from a burger who grown up with the idea of trying to balance out the houses and branches of government so no one side gets too strong.

Perhaps make the political lords appointments based proportionally off the popular vote, so if you get a UKIP type party that gets a lot of votes but few seats they will at least be rewarded with lord seats as they become open.

We are absolutely clear now that there is no way that the Remain side can win. It looks as though the gap's going to be something like 52 to 48, so a 4 point lead for leaving the EU, and that's the result of this referendum which has been preceded by weeks and months of argument and dispute and all the rest of it. The British people have spoken and the answer is: WE'RE OUT.
