Is there any good solution to detecting cannabis-impaired drivers?

A legal challenge by alcohol distributors over who could transport recreational marijuana between cultivation facilities and dispensaries looked as though it might push back the state’s goal of rolling out marijuana sales on July 1.

But marijuana dispensaries that have received a temporary license will be able to sell their existing inventory starting July 1, as long as they meet packaging and labeling requirements laid out in an emergency regulation that Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Thursday, according to Tax Department spokeswoman Stephanie Klapstein. Those regulations are expected to be adopted Monday.

A recent insurance study links increased car crash claims to legalized recreational marijuana.

The Highway Loss Data Institute, a leading insurance research group, said in study results released Thursday that collision claims in Colorado, Washington, and Oregon went up 2.7 percent in the years since legal recreational marijuana sales began when compared with surrounding states.

But... the big but here is that testing drivers to see if they are impaired when it comes to cannabis can only detect if they have used it in the past few weeks, not if they are actually impaired while driving. Is there any solution to this?

The problem of detecting THC in a person's body is trivial. The idea that you can only detect stuff smoked weeks ago is false.

The actual problem is defining what being "too high to drive" is. There are defined limits for alcohol that make sense. There's nothing yet for weed because nobody's had to worry about this problem until a few years ago.

2 years isnt enough time to conclude what kind of impact legalization happen, come back in 8 years.

What portion of that 2.7 percent were suspected of driving under the influence of pot?

What is that compared to the nations average?

Could this be a result of texting and driving instead?

Detection of total THC metabolites in urine, primarily THC-COOH-glucuronide, only indicates prior THC exposure. Detection time is well past the window of intoxication and impairment. Published excretion data from controlled clinical studies may provide a reference for evaluating urine cannabinoid concentrations; however, these data are generally reflective of occasional marijuana use rather than heavy, chronic marijuana exposure. It can take as long as 4 hours for THC-COOH to appear in the urine at concentrations sufficient to trigger an immunoassay (at 50ng/mL) following smoking. Positive test results generally indicate use within 1-3 days; however, the detection window could be significantly longer following heavy, chronic, use. Following single doses of Marinol®, low levels of dronabinol metabolites have been detected for more than 5 weeks in urine. Low concentrations of THC have also been measured in over-the-counter hemp oil products – consumption of these products may produce positive urine cannabinoid test results.
