Usually the officer will ask you to step outside the car so he can search you and retain your firearm. A regrettable instance for sure, but the cop reacted as fast as he could and unfortunately it ended in a death. These things happen. Over here the police has never shot anybody to kill them. Not even people that were armed and it still has worked out pretty well. Warning shots are an effective way to show someone that you are willing to used deadly force without doing so directly.

He told the guy "that's fine" and "don't reach for it" and the guy replied something like "don't worry I won't". Castille was probably already in the process of getting his wallet and was reaching for the back pockets of his trousers to get his license when he mentioned the gun.The cop probably thought Castille was trying to get out the gun. The right procedure for the cop would have been something on the lines like: "Sir I need you to put your hands slowly on the steering wheel imediately and tell me where said gun is." instead of panicking. If he had specifically told him that. Castille wouldn't have been fumbling around. Castille probably realized too late that the cop was mistaking his actions and even worse I'm pretty sure that once the cop had concluded that Castille was reaching for his gun, Castille was practically dead.
