When u add up my gas, car insurance payment, and depreciation I probably pay 4x that weekly for transit to/from work

Here's a thought experiment: whatever our benevolent government pays their employees is minimum wage. a rolling three year average of the bottom 10 percent of government employees (full time/ part time hourly, not bumfuck township councilman tier employment) is what a corporation is legally bound to pay someone in their employ.

mostly this debate is a giant virtue signaling jerk-fest for lefties so your real opinion is totally subjective. You need to answer this question in a statement that desrbes a comfy fast food family with great heathcare.

Kek, what an ironic opinion. It is the unions that one of the principle lobbiers for minimum wage laws. But wait, people working in unions don't make minimum wage. I wonder why they would lobby for it? Job security. They know it causes unemployment and will decrease competition for their jobs, increasing job security.

A high minimum wage almost always lowers employment among the poorest. And even if it doesn't, it raises prices, cuts hours/benefits, and cuts prospects for job creation.

To understand why raising the minimum wage doesn´t work, imagine not being a marxist and having a business, you have employees which you currently pay a fair ammount of dollars, but next month thanks to the new mininum wage law you have to pay them almost double of what you currently pay them, where are you going to get the money to do it? will you take a hit in your own wage? would that be enough? should you fire people to reduce costs? would you use cheaper low quality stuff to reduce expenses? would you raise the costs of your products? would people buy your stuff if they´re made with poor materials or at higher prices?
Now, your workers get those new salaries and go out to spend them in other business, those business have the same new problems, will the workers be better off with those extra dollars if the things they buy have higher prices or are poorly made?
Now, workers have to compete to earn those new wages, they have to produce something that makes it up for those wages, some jobs will be lost, remember when someone else filled your gas tank?
>>
>>131000861
This. If you're the only one at the job doing it right, why would a manager stop their only worker from working? They're just gonna promote the hot girl.

This nigger should know that minimum wage jobs were created to destroy the changes of black people getting jobs.

Minimum wage laws were actually used to keep black people from getting jobs created in the booming economy in the 1920s that had been in the north in the 1930s with the Davis-Bacon Act. They were used during the Apartheid era to put black people on an equal playing field to make an excuse to hire more white workers. They were even contemplating using minimum wage laws to undermine working Chinese immigrants early in the 20th century. That explains why the unemployment rate for the black youth is high.

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0405-leonard-minimum-wage-20160405-story.html

Also, working at McDonalds isn't supposed to be a career. It's supposed to help you save some money to get a career. It's a foundation.

Also, if the minimum wage increases, don't be surprised when you lose your job. Last year, when UC Berkely touted and got the minimum wage, they fired hundreds of staff.

http://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/uc-berkeley-touts-15-minimum-wage-then-fires-hundreds-of-workers-after-it-passes/

In Seattle, local restaurants had to cut jobs because of the minimum wage increase.

Can someone explain me how much McDonalds workers are paid and how much they think they should be paid? And how much you need to get in the US to live okay. I've been living in a crappy town in the UK on ~1100 pounds per month (after tax), and it is definitely not poverty (unless you spend all money on beer as most of my buddies seemed to do). If your wife also works, you can have a family with that money. In Europe an early-career skilled worker can earn about 2k euro after tax. That's an ok salary, like you wife may not have to work full time or perhaps at all if you don't spend much. And it is just like 12 euro per hour if working full time.

>>131003313

Workers and clerks are being replaced with automatons and kiosks in states like California, Florida and others. At my local AMC theatre, they're used to be seven clerks printing out movie tickets for customers. Now, there's only one clerk for pre-ordered clerks, and the rest are kiosks that the customer can order on themselves.

http://www.businessinsider.com/self-service-kiosks-are-replacing-workers-2016-5

>>130996435
Higher wages almost always yields no benefits, and generally people who vote for it are uneducated, but moving up isn't as easy as it sounds.

Wealth and the environment you live in plays a key factor on how easy it is to transition into the middle class and a well-paying job.
>>

The minimum wage is a popular policy for politicians to promote because it sounds good on paper if you don't think much about it. Everybody loves to feel like raising the minimum wage just helps out all those poor people so much, and creates so much equality.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way. Raising the minimum wage is not a good tool for helping the poor, to start with. To start with, around half of people living in poverty don't have a job, so raising the minimum wage isn't going to help them. And if they're having trouble finding a job at $8-ish/hour, imagine how difficult it will be for them to get hired at $15/hour? Additionally, there are plenty of people who are in poverty even though they already make $16/hour, because they have 6 kids. Or maybe they make $15/hour already, but they only work 20 hours a week because they're a single parent. There's a lot of people making minimum wage that are house-wives, or college students, or in general just young. In fact, the BLS data in 2015 showed that 50% of people making minimum wage were under 25. And one of David Neumark's papers estimated only around 18% of the families who would benefit from a minimum wage increase are actually poor. And if you're one of the unlucky few who loses their job due to cuts because of a minimum wage increase, you're also not benefiting from it.

Lots of people like to say raising the minimum wage will solve all of these problems, but I have news for those people. If it was going to solve problems, it would have done so by now. The minimum wage has grown 40% over the last decade, and has actually grown faster than the average wage. Yet all these problems people keep complaining about keep getting worse. So clearly raising the minimum wage isn't really helping.

People who want a higher minimum wage don't understand what they're advocating, and politicians promising to raise the minimum wage don't care about the effects..they just care that it gets people to vote for them
>>
>>131006749

This article has kinda been debunked.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelsaltsman/2017/06/21/the-problems-with-a-new-study-on-seattles-15-minimum-wage/#245ba7dc156a

>The City of Seattle was already funding a highly-qualified, unbiased research team at the University of Washington to do such a report. The team includes a roster of impressive researchers from a wide variety of backgrounds--ranging from Jacob Vigdor, who is a professor at the University and an adjunct fellow at the Manhattan Institute, to Hillary Wething, who was formerly at the union-backed Economic Policy Institute.

The UW reports on Seattle's $15 experiment had something for everyone. Unfortunately for the Mayor's office, their conclusions on the early stages of Seattle's $15 wage experiment were not uniformly positive. The Washington Post reports:

>"The average hourly wage for workers affected by the increase jumped from $9.96 to $11.14, but wages likely would have increased some anyway due to Seattle's overall economy. Meanwhile, although workers were earning more, fewer of them had a job than would have without an increase. Those who did work had fewer hours than they would have without the wage hike."

>Yet the anecdotal evidence in Seattle backs up the empirical data provided by the UW team. Local restaurant owners of establishments such as Louisa's Cafe and z Pizza have shut down, citing the cost of the minimum wage law as a factor. Karam Mann, a franchisee who owns a Subway location with his wife Heidi, has cut his staffing levels from seven employees down to three.

>The wage floor is still rising in Seattle, and there are more chapters to write on the city's minimum wage experiment. But if accuracy if the goal, the Berkeley team is not the right choice to author them.

Abolishing the minimum wage is the only sane policy economically. If you decide you want to work for a wage, then that's between you and your employer, the government does not need to step in and "bargain" on your behalf. If an employer decides they're going to be retarded and offer $2 an hour for a job, nobody will take the job and they'll have to raise their prices to get people to work for them. This shit isn't complicated.

It's not the same in the slightest because the number of unaccounted variables is a number of degrees in magnitude smaller than comparing the psychological motivations of millions of people. I can actually do trials and compare separate groups of people reacting and not being exposed to certain stimuli simultaneously and I can repeat that experiment many times in the medical field. Please tell me how I'm going to do that with something like minimum wage.

>the number of unaccounted variables is a number of degrees in magnitude smaller than comparing the psychological motivations of millions of people

Google 'genetics', then take a guess at how many different combinations of possible dietary habits there are, then rough estimate the number of different activity levels people can have, then ponder the different chemicals people may or may not be exposed to in their environments, permutate all of those variables, then think about how those variables can vary differently for given individuals over their lifetime and how many permutations of those permutations arise, then pick up a calculator, and come back when you've figured out how numbers work.

>comparing the psychological motivations of millions of people
Either we can study the psychological motivations of people just fine, in which case we can study the psychological motivations of people in an economic setting too, or we can't study the psychological motivations of people, in which case wouldn't that mean medical studies suffer the same problems as economic studies?

>compare separate groups of people reacting and not being exposed to certain stimuli simultaneously

You mean like comparing people in different municipalities/states/countries with similar economies but different policies?

>and I can repeat that experiment many times in the medical field

History repeats itself plenty, and there are plenty of different governing bodies who's economic policy you can study the effects of. Very, very few fields are blessed with the ability for researchers to conduct extremely rigorous studies in using exacting application of the scientific method in order to get '5 sigma' results supporting your hypothesis. Yet people figure out ways to work around the imperfections and get results anyways. Doesn't suddenly invalidate everything that's ever been studied.

I'm all for the workers themselves unionizing and negotiating for their pay, that's what the free market is. Unions are the people coming together and selling their labor as a product to be negotiated with between them and a company.

But what I'm not for is somebody agreeing to take a job with a pay that won't support their lifestyle then calling that company greedy for getting exactly what they were told from day one they would get. And I'm even less for people demanding the government FORCE companies to pay their employees more. If they want it, they have to get it. They have to negotiate pay, vacation time, healthcare benefits, raises, etc.

Do people realise a minimum wage increase is basically subsidized by everyone making over the minimum wage?

It's basically a tax that hits everyone immediately above the new minimum wage (16, 17 dollars) hardest while everyone making more is hit, but not nearly as hard.
