I make $15 in a skilled trade and am living paycheck to paycheck with my family. While I do agree that the minimum wage is too low I wonder if any of these idiots realize the implications behind raising it $5-6 overnight.

To understand why raising the minimum wage doesn´t work, imagine not being a marxist and having a business, you have employees which you currently pay a fair ammount of dollars, but next month thanks to the new mininum wage law you have to pay them almost double of what you currently pay them, where are you going to get the money to do it? will you take a hit in your own wage? would that be enough? should you fire people to reduce costs? would you use cheaper low quality stuff to reduce expenses? would you raise the costs of your products? would people buy your stuff if they´re made with poor materials or at higher prices?
Now, your workers get those new salaries and go out to spend them in other business, those business have the same new problems, will the workers be better off with those extra dollars if the things they buy have higher prices or are poorly made?
Now, workers have to compete to earn those new wages, they have to produce something that makes it up for those wages, some jobs will be lost, remember when someone else filled your gas tank?

Can someone explain me how much McDonalds workers are paid and how much they think they should be paid? And how much you need to get in the US to live okay. I've been living in a crappy town in the UK on ~1100 pounds per month (after tax), and it is definitely not poverty (unless you spend all money on beer as most of my buddies seemed to do). If your wife also works, you can have a family with that money. In Europe an early-career skilled worker can earn about 2k euro after tax. That's an ok salary, like you wife may not have to work full time or perhaps at all if you don't spend much. And it is just like 12 euro per hour if working full time.

The minimum wage is a popular policy for politicians to promote because it sounds good on paper if you don't think much about it. Everybody loves to feel like raising the minimum wage just helps out all those poor people so much, and creates so much equality.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way. Raising the minimum wage is not a good tool for helping the poor, to start with. To start with, around half of people living in poverty don't have a job, so raising the minimum wage isn't going to help them. And if they're having trouble finding a job at $8-ish/hour, imagine how difficult it will be for them to get hired at $15/hour? Additionally, there are plenty of people who are in poverty even though they already make $16/hour, because they have 6 kids. Or maybe they make $15/hour already, but they only work 20 hours a week because they're a single parent. There's a lot of people making minimum wage that are house-wives, or college students, or in general just young. In fact, the BLS data in 2015 showed that 50% of people making minimum wage were under 25. And one of David Neumark's papers estimated only around 18% of the families who would benefit from a minimum wage increase are actually poor. And if you're one of the unlucky few who loses their job due to cuts because of a minimum wage increase, you're also not benefiting from it.

Lots of people like to say raising the minimum wage will solve all of these problems, but I have news for those people. If it was going to solve problems, it would have done so by now. The minimum wage has grown 40% over the last decade, and has actually grown faster than the average wage. Yet all these problems people keep complaining about keep getting worse. So clearly raising the minimum wage isn't really helping.

People who want a higher minimum wage don't understand what they're advocating, and politicians promising to raise the minimum wage don't care about the effects..they just care that it gets people to vote for them
