I've mulled this over being a member of the generation. It boils down as they things typically do to a fair number of factors. Consider that healthy skepticism, critical thought, strong moral fiber were something the the preceding Boomer generation had spent a large amount of time trying to distance themselves from and Millennial generation was growing up just the boomers were fully taking charge from the older battered World War Two generation. Which while personally strong having faced depression, a World War, and after that a Cold War doted over much on their children and gave them the greatest and richest gifts had ever been seen, but they did not have the moral back bone that their elders assumed they would eventually grow after a wild phase.

Boomers now took over and the oldest of them had been in charge since the early 80s (you can chart a soft influence line by identifying when a generation starts to age beyond 40 and at that point will begin taking more senior positions resulting in that generation start to gain influence, for example around 2022 will be when Millennials will begin doing this to retiring or dying boomers).

Thus influence on this generation has been mostly from a generation that is notorious for it's avarice and rejection of morality as well as critical thought. With only Generation X showing an interest in such things things to a very welcome dose philosophy and exploration from their own Silent Generation fore-bearers. My dad for example is an older Gen Xer and most music he played while I was growing up came from bands like Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd and classical composers. [Part 1/2]
