At these speeds, the arc is not large enough to make a big change. Even if it is 2 miles in a direct line, it might be 2.3 to 2.4 miles for the arc. Still way too slow then. Even assuming an arc of 3 miles, which would be extremely unrealistic, the bullet's average speed would be too low.

Assuming 8.5 seconds and an sec of 4500 metres gives an average speed of some 550m/s, which seems sufficient for the deceleration.

The bullet was very definitely to be going sub-sonic at the time of impact.
Sorry for the imperial measurements, but at 2500 yards, a 50 cal which leaves the barrel at 2950 fps will only have a velocity of about 1100 fps. This is just under the speed of sound. The bullet not only flew 2500 yards, but another 1300 yards. Can't do the math cuz I'm a brainlet, but the bullet was going VERY slow when it impacted the soldier.

Fuck me. Found a much better explanation. Although no wind is calculated and the temperature and and pressure calculations are obviously off, the bullet was about 900fps at 3700 yards, would have fallen 730 feet if fired horizontally, and taken 8 seconds. However, the bullet was obviously fired at an arc, possibly slowed by wind, giving it the last 1-2 seconds to reach the magic just under 10 second time
