Here's a question:
What is the purpose of art?
>>130978486
Why do we perceive mountains to be so beautiful? I can understand the green environment or shiny crystal-like things (resembling water surface) but why mountains? What's the evolutionary advantage? You can't eat a mountain.
>>130978738
Recognizable landmarks maybe? Or the perceived safety of higher ground.
>>130978738
Natural protection from enemy tribes
Basically a natural wall. Safe and comfys.

I love Rockwell's stuff, it's easy enough to understand the story the piece is about yet there' still so much you can infer and chew into. He's such an amazing artist.

Had the good fortune to see this in person. Anyway these /pol/ art threads show deep misunderstanding of how art works and goes through various periods and styles.
Gentleman, well played.

Industrial design is useful art. Engineering is the art of blending all design compromises (no design is without compromise) to produce the desired result. Contemplate a wooden ship and say say it's without art. Art is everywhere.
>>130998118
Second that. That's a wonderful painting. Everything Norman Rockwell does is great too.

In this piece the artist is placing his full emotion into it. You can tell with the way he drew the eyes bulging from the head and the way he characterised the pig as overly masculine and dominating. What do you all think?
>>130999771
When Zeus and Typhon fought, Zeus flung lightning at him and wounded him gravely. He moved in to finish it off by hand, but was quickly wrapped up in its dragon hand tentacles. Typhon stole all of Zeus's tendons and trapped him in a cave guarded by a dragon.
Hermes managed to sneak past the dragon and give Zeus new tendons. After slaying the dragon, Zeus rode after Typhon on a flying chariot. Having learned his lesson, he threw lightning at Typhon until it had fallen again, and then he dropped a mountain on top of it to kill it.
This isn't classical but I still love it.

Fun Fact: The Garden Gnome is descended from Priapus, Roman god of masculine fertility. The most common symbol of Priapus was his absolutely enormous cock. One myth tells us of him trying to rape a nymph; the rest of the gods take pity on her and turn her into a lotus. Priapus gets rooted to the ground as a tree.
Priapus has no Greek analog. The Romans would have Priapism Statues. You'd remove Priapus head and rub his cock for good luck. The Garden Gnome is the descendant of this practice.

Not evolutionary, but the mountain evokes the sublime more readily than any other landmark.
>>131001608
>>130978738
>The sublime also has a causal structure that is unlike that of beauty. Its formal cause is thus the passion of fear (especially the fear of death); the material cause is equally aspects of certain objects such as vastness, infinity, magnificence, etc.; its efficient cause is the tension of our nerves; the final cause is God having created and battled Satan, as expressed in John Milton's great epic Paradise Lost.

Yes it will. It is actually the only hope (alongside with the Russian schools) of traditional art. The American art teachers (those who teach the fundamentals, not the postmodern ideologues). I am actually in the process of saving up to attend an atelier for a few years and the best options are the likes of Watts Atelier in California. The big irony is that the biggest ateliers in Europe are run and were built by Americans.
Don't get me wrong, it all started in Europe with the Renaissance and was built further upon the Flemish masters, but we Europeans absolutely trashed this tradition and wisdom and now we rely on the Americans who initially carried that wisdom over to the US and now shipping it back here.
If anyone is serious about getting really good, there is no way around the foundations rediscovered by Robert Beverly Hale, George Bridgman, Glenn Vilppu and the newer generation of Steve Huston and Jeff Watts. Surely you can ignore the forefront of draftsmanship and painting, but you are seriously gimping yourself then and will get left behind.
There will be another revolution in art, traditional ateliers are popping up everywhere and the industry actually needs people who can draw. It will start with the Americans and we will pick it up right where John Sargent Singer left off and we will add something new to it. The times where you can beg for government grants for period blood paintings without selling anything in your life will soon be over.
