The interesting thing is that while independence has been something that about 20-30 % of Scots at any time have supported, the referendum was kind of a bit sudden.

The SNP had won in 2007, and increased that victory in 2011. In neither of these elections was independence mentioned, nor was it a reason they won. They mainly won them because they held up their core vote up north and in rural areas, and won over the Central belt that had been let down by New Labour.

(Now of course, their core vote up north is going going gone, back to Tory -- which it always used to be, of course -- and their core vote in the cities is crumbling to a rejuvenated Labour party- though at a much slower rate)
But that's for another post I guess, ill get back on topic.

They won in '07 and '11 with nary a mention of independence. So when in 2011/12 they announced the referendum, there was a long run-up (between 2012 and 2014) but probably not long enough. What they should have done is talk about independence more from 2007 -> onwards, and realized that independence wasn't the reason they won those elections. They should have drip-fed it to us , and used good arguments that only got deployed late in the day, much earlier.

Then in 2015 they won (basically) every Scottish seat, and unlike 2011, this was ON THE BACK of independence. So that is the sign of a clear mandate.
Even in the recent UK election there, they did get cut from 56 to 35 seats, but it's still a clear majority of seats.
However when you calculate all "Unionist" party votes they do outweigh independence party votes -- but of course, how many Labour voters would go for independence? A fair few I'd have thought.

Also, 2014, of all times in recent history, was probably the worst time of all for independence. I hate to make it all about oil, but the global oil price crash in 2014/15 is not really taken into account by indy supporters. It was fucking huge, at one point the oil cost less than the barrel it was in. (1/2)

I voted No, though I am not opposed to independence. And while I appreciate the cultural argument, and I hate to reduce a nation's indentity into bean-counting, but ultimately money does make the world go round. I don't like that fact, but I can't deny it. Culturally, yeah Scotland can be its own country, no doubt. But financially ? It needs to be sorted out properly before we take that step.

Anyway looking forward, the independence camp are in a decent position. Long-term, it's always likely anyway (as is Irish unification), and the SNP are still the biggest party by some distance.

in 2014 we hadn't had enough time to really discuss it properly ; now we have, and people are coming to their own conclusions. I think that, with good global economic conditions, and some backbone, the independence camp could win a referendum.
