But we can kiss our spot as #1 in the world goodbye. I really see no way we will hold onto that. If everything goes perfectly, we might be able to reclaim it.

Here's the thing you are missing. Socially Liberal States don't have long term viability. When the Turks were on top, and all the other ethnicities were at the bottom, there was stability in the nation. The moment the Turks jumped on board with the PC "let's invite a minority sultan and give Christians the power," the Ottoman Empire collapsed.

Multiethnic empires on average have existed across time, but anything socially liberal dies very quickly. If Political Correctness ever comes to full power, then the worst case scenario will happen.

Not at all. What happened is that they started multi-ethnic and became monoethnic. Meaning they took many ethnicities, and merged them into one ethnicity.

There isn't going to be a civil war at least not in the way most people think it will go down
more than likely the current violence will just keep escalating until it is pure anarchy in the streets and the police won't be able to control the urban areas anymore
rural areas will fair better at first but soon "raiders" will push out of the urban areas to find supplies thus destroying the less populated ares in the process
there may be large factions at first while wide area communication systems are still semi-functional but as these fail large groups will divide continuously until it is quite literally just single families fighting each other
basically it will be all out anarchy for a while (figure on minimum one generation before people begin forming governing bodies again) then as the majority of the population dies off (let's say around 250 million over a 20-40 year period) small bands of people will form in order to end the complete chaos that has ensued after that... who knows
of course that's the optimistic outlook reality the area that was the US stays a gigantic clusterfuck for decades even centuries before any thing productive occurs and the violence and refugees pour into Canada and Mexico possibly destabilizing them as well and if not the putting a great deal of strain on them
and all that isn't even mentioning the possibility of Russian Chinese or even UN intervention early on or even later and the kind of chaotic insanity that would result from that
tl;dr
lots of angry unprepared people with guns ready to slaughter each other in a heartbeat for basic needs should the US become anarchic and it'll be horrific

The thing is that while Spain boiled down to right vs left on the surface, it was really a six-way conflict. On the right you had fascist Falangists, monarchists, and traditionalist Catholics, while on the left you had Socialists (and a separate group of Communists), Anarchists, and liberal Republicans.

We might see the same thing in the US, with locally strong factions forming alliances on a Right vs Left axis, but it could also just end up a free for all. It will depend on how much infrastructure and communications collapse.
