In America, it's pretty much like dating a girl who isn't from a broken home, has college goals, and is SLIGHTLY more traditional. Regardless if they're J1 visa holders or their families actually moved here.

It's a pretty normal experience. I have no idea how this all goes down in Europe, though. Anyone have anything to add from that front?

I actually visited one girl in Istanbul. Her family was pretty obsessed with Ataturk, dad served in the Navy, became a professor, and her mom was a retired banker. The both of them were pretty politically vocal with me, but she never really was. I didn't get a lot of SJW talk from them, but loads of anti organized Islam and anti-Mr. Mustache talk. They loathed the calls for prayers, liked bars open super late, and identified as Muslim pretty loosely.

Most of the Turks I've met on J1 visas have been sort of the like that. They aren't really interested in diving into a political discussion hardly ever it seems. When I was actually IN Turkey, it was a completely different story. If I was out at a bar or restaurant alone, political talk was pretty much all that was coming my way. This was back in 2014, so all I was hearing was talk of Ataturk and Assad being ridiculously tight and them wishing someone would do something about it, on top of the recent (back then) protests all over Taksim.

No, but I dated an Egyptian girl whose dad told me he didn't "let her date" until she was 20, and she backed it up. I know a Muslim girl who I'm not entirely sure about the dating situation, but it's exactly the same about being cut off financially. If she moves out or decides not to be a part of the family, they will cut any and all ties. Also she plans to have whoever she is with basically move in with them as a whole. I guess it's tradition or something that everyone lives together.

The shitty part was that they let her make a lot of financial mistakes, on top of taking out loans for college, so that she'd always need the family. She had something like ~5k in credit card debt, student loans, and she got herself into a shitty car loan and owed something like 8k. Her dad owned a fucking hotel and made the MINIMUM payments per month for her. I'm pretty sure it's just so she stayed in that situation for longer.

It might sound more dire than it really was. I've had a couple of friends make shitty moves like that before, but they were able to pull themselves out of it. She was completely convinced that there was NO FUCKING WAY she'd survive.

After almost a year of hearing about this, I felt like I was talking to someone who was sort of brainwashed when it comes to financial independence. It's like she had all of the resources in the world, but nobody in her family really felt like teaching her the basics when it comes to establishing yourself financially. They allowed her work herself into a situation where she'd be completely reliant on them.

Yeah, probably different. It's not like they let her make those decisions so she'd learn responsibility, though. I've never known a wealthy family that failed to teach their kids somewhat decent financial habits. The way I felt about it was they gave her just enough rope to hang herself financially, but nothing serious considering, so she couldn't ever stray too far.

She was doing fucking amazing in college, though. Smart as fuck when it came to anything but basic finances, but she also kinda just grew up in a bubble.
