While I wouldn't have convicted the cop, he was not in control of the situation. He didn't know when and how to escalate force, he didn't know how to give specific instructions. The way I see it, his incompetence combined with Castile's stupidity caused this situation.

Example: The officer says "don't reach for it". To the guy in the car, when he's told "don't reach for it", he could be thinking "okay, I won't reach for it, I'll just get my papers". Yes, again, that's a stupid thing to think given the context, but it is something an awkward or nervous person would think.
What the cop meant and what he should have said was "don't move". The only interpretation of that command is to not move.

He could have easily handled it better. While he is not guilty of any crime, he is unprofessional and has no business being a cop
