Georgian studying in UK here. I can't speak for Russia as I have never lived there, but it's pretty bad in Georgia as well (although been improving a lot). Most of my friends and people that I know are scraping by and spending their slave wages on rent + food. My aunt and her husband cant even sustain their children with a combined salary and live in our old flat to save on rent. Most of my old classmates will probably never own a flat and live with their parents/grandparents. But at least we have the basic services such as electricity/gas now and health care/education is improving. I remember we had to warm our flat with wood & pinecones when I was small.

My family was lucky as we have always been well off, despite commies robbing us during the revolution. My dad managed to get a job abroad and eventually slaved into an executive role after 15 years of work. Now we're doing our best to invest in Georgia and I hope that I can take all my knowledge and experience that I will accrue in the west back.

The only saving grace of the country was Saakashvili. Think what you will of him and his Ossetia fuckup, but without his reforms, we would have drowned in shit. At least now we have a chance.

People saying that roads in Russia being shit are due to climate can BTFO, because Finland has a very similar climate, yet their roads are like autobahn. Same with Norway.
Another factor is huge dependency on oil and gas - it's like a black curse. There is no motivation for the government to produce or to develop hence why Russia's GDP is still in the shitter and is barely above Italy's GDP.
