Other people have had the drive (see Genghis, or Muslims) or the technology (Chinese, for example), but it really came together in Europeans at the right time for whatever reason.

I tend to think it was simply a matter of technology finally catching up with spirit; most of modern Europe is the result of Indo-Europeans conquering the continent, all the way to the Atlantic, establishing the dominate languages and paternal lines of today.
