At the beginning of the 20th century they weren't, besides possibly Denmark which I'm not as sure of, and countries like Italy and France had longer histories, more contributions, and probably had more developed institutions allowing for economic growth, scientific advancement, etc. and yet now these countries have noticeably higher GDPs per capita than either of those countries. How did these countries become so successful?

Sweden is one of the wealthiest countries in Europe and doesn't have oil like Norway does. Even without oil it's likely that Norway would have developed into a similar tier of wealth/economic success.
