So why shouldn't there be an authority in that case?

It's a bunch of words written down on paper. It may be divinely inspired, but it can easily be sullied by our own imperfect interpretation and biases.

That is why you need to get a bit extra-biblical. Sola Scriptura is flawed.

You listen to the Church that can be traced back to Jesus Christ himself. Before the 16th century, there was only two real Churches, the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. And the differences between them were entirely political. The theological differences were superficial. It wasn't until the Reformation were everyone started interpreting the Bible however they want that we have all these denominations with wildly differing theology. It was a return of the chaos that happened in the early church before people started listening to the Bishops and before the Bible itself was compiled.

It's actually difficult to find a good, definitive answer for why the Churches split, because it seems to be buried under a lot of historical political context.

From what I understand is, the Roman Catholics claim the early Church always recognized that Rome was the centre of the faith, and the Bishop of Rome, being the successor of Peter, was the Primarch of the whole Church. And the Orthodox Church split off from the Roman Catholic Church because they rebelled against the true Primarch and wanted to do their own thing.

The Orthodox Church claims that the early Church never saw the Bishop of Rome as a Primarch. And the Roman Catholic Church split off from the Orthodox Church because they rebelled against the united Church and wanted the Bishop of Rome to reign over the whole Church.

Like I said, it's all political, it's always been politics that have seperated the East and West. The theological differences are superficial.
