Why did Hitler start a landwar with Russia and its Slavic territories when history has consistently shown Russia to be virtually unconquerable by traditional means... During winter... Did he really believe this was the best method to crush Bolshevism? Was he just that confident in the new Fallschirmjäger divisions?

If Hitler just wanted to protect European borders, why did he start an alliance with a country 5,000 miles away two years before the war even began... Barbarossa started in June, the German army and its allies wiped out the Soviet army twice completely, once at the border and once in Ukraine, they only got stopped in front of Moscow because of attrition, bad supplies and the weather. They really didn't think the Soviets had any gas left in the tank, so to speak.

Appeasement sort of emboldened Hitler but he also knew he had to keep going, plus Poland was acting against German interest becaause they thought Britain would defend them to the death.

France was also offered peace but the Germans thought they could roll the dice in 1940 because they had the superior army. Subdueing France in some way was always part of the plan to have a secure flank to act against communism/Russia.

After World War I, German communists tried to take over Germany. In the last free German election, November 1932, the communists got 16% of the vote, the socialists 20%, the Nazis 33%. So the reds outnumbered the browns. The communist vote kept increasing, all Stalin had to do was wait it out. Although the nazis took over after that and banned all other political parties.

We keep hearing in the US how socialism is happening. It has been since the New Deal and World War II - government got much bigger, a big welfare state was created, government is more involved in industry, bails out banks etc. The same in Europe.

If western governments had not incorporated elements of socialism, the communist idea is they would have been destroyed by now. So it was a win/win in Russia's mind - either they move left and survive, or stay the same and have a revolution and become even more left wing.

It is kind of like England since the Magna Carta. It keeps moving gradually left. I mean, Corbyn is the most left wing opposition leader England ever had. He used to sit next to Dennis Skinner. England has crept left for centuries to avoid revolutions. With the exception of Charles I, who tried to fight this trend and got his head chopped off.
