I don't the the cost but you can own any type of shotgun including semi automatic but they have a max of 3 rounds (including 1 chambered) on a shotgun license. For rifles you need a firearm certificate (which is different for some reason) you can have any caliber bolt action but semi autos can only be rim fire .22. You also need 'good reason' which doesn't include self defence, so basically either be part of a club or hunting and this isn't just for the licenses but each gun you get on it. Also all handguns are illegal unless you add a retardedly long barrel and a non removable stock.

i have refinished stocks though and whether its worth the effort depends. the last thing you want to do is devalue a collectible piece. if your nagant is a common refurb 91-30 with common date, there are millions around so i dont see whats wrong with a light touch up. they were varnished with shellac, so actually refinishing mosins is quite easy. you dont have to completely strip them, if there is enough original shellac you can use a solvent to "melt" the shellac and spread it around the wood again, or you can top it off with some new shellac from the store

Another thing to look into is the 'miniature rifle range exemption'. Two years ago I refinished a 100€ G96/11 (Swiss) which was absolutely worth it but those are also not as drenched in disgusting fat and shellac.

the cosmoline is a fucking bitch to remove if you dont do it the right way. if you do it the right way, its a piece of cake. ill tell you what has worked well for me

1) bring some water to a boil
2) get a shitty container that can hold hot water which you dont mind throwing away
3) put all the small parts, like the pins, springs, disassembled bolt pieces, screws into the little container
4) wait til the boiling water cools a tiny bit so its not boiling but still very hot, then pour it in to the container with all the small parts
5) let that sit for a few minutes
6) fish out parts with a spoon or something and wipe them down with a rag, the cosmoline should be mostly dissolved in the water but thick globs on your parts will wipe away very easily
7) go outside or over a bucket (not your fucking sink or in house plumbing) and pour the hot water into the barrel of the action and all inside and around it
8) the shit should just flow away, wipe whatever doesnt with a rag and keep cleaning with hot water
9) your shit should dry up really fast because the water and metal will be really hot. now just oil it in every crevice with gun oil
10) the wood is the most annoying part, dont use hot water here.
11) wrap wood in paper towels and put in a black garbage bag. its summer now, think of the hottest place available to you (trunk of car, outside back yard in sun, shed, etc) and put it there
12) wait an hour or so, check the wood. wipe down all the oozing melted cosmoline. wrap papertowel around it again and put it back in the bag and hot place. do this until it stops oozing lots of cosmoline

thats it, then you can use mineral spirits on a rag or some shellac from the store and touch up the wood on the stock. if you want to actually make it look brand new, strip everything to bare wood using paint stripper, use steam to pop up any dents, sand it lightly with 120grit sand paper then 220 grit, then apply stain/oil for color, and shellac on top. i like natural oil

denatured alcohol will dissolve and remove the shellac very quickly, then you can use some degreasing soap and water to wash the gripe off the outside of the stock and raise up the wood fibers for oil absorbtion and sanding

ive done probably about a dozen stocks/rifles using this method with minor variances depending on finish and rifle

just be careful about the wood stamped cartouches, getting them wet or sanding them will destroy them

thanks. i am a huge fan of the mauser rifle, probably my favorite to collect. i have a few german ones in original condition, one is a prewar with the weimar acceptance eagles and the others are war period with swastika holding eagles stamped on the side, as well as on the stock cartouche. i also have a couple of cheaper russian captured k98s with the markings scrubbed for the same reason as the bundeswehr i imagine. they are amazing rifles, do you have any? if not, i highly recommend you pick one up if you ever get the chance. they sure hurt your shoulder though, very stout cartridge for such a slender and light carbine. every time i shoot them at the range i wonder how the boys and men did it for hundreds of rounds in battles. men were definitely manlier back then

i just watched the nutnfancy video, the finish on his looks exactly like the tung oil finish i used on one. definitely not shellac. it looks like he cleaned up his stock of dirt and grease, sanded it.

ok sorry i just watched the whole video, its not a wax at all he used. the brand is called minwax, but it is a polyurethane finish. i refinished a mosin with that as well, it is water proof, it takes away from the "natural" feel of the wood though. it makes it very hard feeling, no wood pores exposed. and it can be glossy if you put a few coats on, or dull matte if you do just one or two coats and buff it down lightly with steel wool. its probably the best way to protect the wood, but also ruins the collector value since its a bit more permanent of a treatment. if you dont plan to sell the gun and its not a high value gun, and you like the way it looks i see no issues with using it. i used it on a $100 mosin and was very happy with how it came out. wish i had pics of it to show you

once you get your german collection down, if you get a chance look into more swiss rifles like the 9611 you mentioned. man they are great guns

i owned an american made version of that for a while, it was shitty (due to being american made) and i sold it. because of the import restrictions and bill clinton era bans, a lot of those were sold as parts here in america and companies rebuilt them up themselves to resell as complete rifles, and most of them are shitty for that reason. im sure the actual german originals are amazing. definitely a fun gun to shoot though. do you ever go on /k/ anon?

I've never once had Rimlock in any Enfield. Or really, any gun that uses rimmed cartridges because I'm not an idiot. If you load the stripper clips right it won't happen and even if you did the Enfield's magazine is pretty well designed to the point that if you had rimlock you can just push down on the rounds and the magazine will pop them in the correct position.
