Part of the Good Friday Agreement for PIRA putting weapons beyond use was the elimination of the border, which happened. The six counties voted AGAINST Brexit.

Putting a border back up would not be good. Remember that PIRA learned over time that bombings in the six counties did little, bombing the Grand Hotel, or Canary Wharf, or Harrods etc. is what made the English sit up and take notice.

No one cares if there is customs between the island of Ireland and Britain. A new border between the six and twenty-six counties would be a problem.

Also, I doubt if a border went up that it would mean shootings and bombs that day. But it would lead to problems over time. The thirty-two counties of Ireland are sovereign due to the 1916 proclamation and decision of the Second Dáil. A foreign country using its army to put up a wall in Ireland is akin to an act of war. It will not go well over the long term.

The political problem for May is she is dependent on DUP support in Westminster. This might cause her to do foolhardy things. Which won't have effect now, but might in a decade. Catholics will probably be in the majority in the six counties in a decade. It's the unionist's last stand. They're beat.

The OIRA were the communists. PIRA came into being because they split from the communists. It doesn't mean PIRA were right wing, but they weren't all communists like the OIRA was. Also, as is known, PIRA avoided conflict with 26-county Gardai, which the left revolutionary groups did not.
