While it's technically true that each state is a sovereign nation in it's own right, I think the whole "states comoletely acting independent of the federal government" was abolished with the Articles of Confederation.

The most diverse state is California though, and we have some of the lowest crime rates. I live here and almost never feel unsafe. Even crime in Los Angeles isn't as bad as many Midwestern and Southern cities, so much for sp*cs causing lots of crime huh?
