Southern Italy is just generally more rural than the north, that's it. It's a little more "cultured" if anything. People are friendlier, the food is better, the sights and towns are more beautiful etc. The north is essentially just "Americanized", which is why they look down on us.

It's like listening to somebody speaking Portuguese and realizing that they put emphasis to the same things due to the way they view the world.

Well, as you said, it's because of the latin roots. If you studied latin, you'd notice that the structure of the period is much more similar to english languege rather than italian or, maybe, portuguese and spanish. I think you'd be fine in learning italian, mostly because spanish sounds already so similar to italian. One thing I notice, though, is that Spanish speaker talk in a very fast very, almost everyone. Don't know why, they speak very fast compared to almost every other speaker.
