John Oliver delivered a segment that basically blasts the Coal industry, debunks Trumps job claims, and utterly destroys Bob Murray... how does /pol/ refute the facts in this without resorting to making fun of Oliver?

Coal is cheap as fuck and a very reliable source of energy. We have a ton of coal here, so we might as well use it. Eventually, natural gas will take over. However, this illusion with solar/wind is ridiculous. Making solar panels produces too much pollution and required rare earth models. Wind is not reliable and maintaining wind turbines is not efficient. Nuclear is the best option on the long run, but liberals hate that too.

This dude knows what is up.

The vast majority of mined coal is bituminous.
This coal is used to make coke.

To make it, you need to BURN IT in a special furnace. If you're burning it to make coke, you can use it to boil water. If you can boil water, you can generate steam to spin a turbine and generate electricity.

Coke is used in the production of EVERY SINGLE KIND OF REFINED METAL, AND THE RECYCLING OF ALL METALS.

We NEED coal.
If we burn it in cleaner factories here, we get salable coke, fuel for forges and refineries, and ENERGY.

There's no reason not to do this.

It creates jobs, it stimulates production, it encourages trade, and it keeps America rich in usable metals (and recycling metal is the only recycling material that is a net profit).

>What about Trumps EPA guy claiming to create 50,000 jobs when only 1500 were actually created according to recently released bureau of labour statistics?

Well paying industrial jobs have a much higher economic multiplier than low wage service jobs. Those 1500 jobs (so far) support engineering and consulting jobs, heavy equipment manufacturing jobs, mechanic jobs, and jobs in downstream industries like refining, tool manufacturing, and auto production. They create transportation industry jobs. We even get carbon fiber for things like wind turbines and high-end bicycles from coal.

They also support plenty of local service jobs in restaurant, retail and entertainment.

Low wage service industries just don't provide the same level of broad economic stimulation that heavy industry does.

Weird to me that the people who seem to hate coal the worst don't usually live anywhere within 300 miles of a coal mine.

A new mine just opened in Pennsylvania. More mining companies are talking about opening new mines in the US. If coal jobs weren't coming back new mines wouldn't open. So that's incorrect.
Sure coal is nonrenewable but, solar and wind can't produce enough electricity. And no doubt the musuem in Kentucky did solar for tax reasons.
And coal is not a dieing industry despite claims. If it was why would we still be mining coal? Why would other countries mine coal? It's because you HAVE to have it for electricity. Solar and wind are great but they won't power US let alone the world. You like a constant flow of electricity instead of intermittent right? That's because of coal. Andthe musem in Kentucky more than likely used solar for tax reasons, just like everyone else.

Here's a source for the mine since you didnt look it up. http://insider.foxnews.com/amp/article/56330
Sorry for the repeat I hit copy instead of cut and made a few changes. Didn't read over my post.
And with the musem I don't have a source saying they did it for this reason but that would be a stupid thing to say. Why would you switch to solar otherwise? It's great PR because you can use the "we're green" meme and you get tax deductions for being eco friendly. But you aren't going to say that because that would be bad PR.
However the musem doesn't take away from the fact that a new mine just opened. And of course we and other countries still use coal for electricity so it's not dead. Now natural gas is cheaper but it will go up in price and not everyone in the world has natural gas. And where do they go for electricity? Coal. And why can't it be American coal? You see my point correct? Coal is going to be a thing whether America does it or not, so why don't we do it and then Americans can have more decent paying jobs? Are you against that idea?

Not really. He's just taking on too many things at once, he's obviously an amateur in politics and hasn't acclimated himself, yet. I think it's obvious anyways.
But he hasn't "backed off" China, especially if he wants to make the US competitive on a international scale. It'll ramp up, there's no alternative. China produces a fuckton of metal and raw material. I don't think I need to explain the value of the US producing it's own raw materials.
Russia is also another major producer of raw materials and petroleum. That's why all the world powers are present in the Middle East, although you never hear about China's involvement. There's also China's expansion into allied controlled waters.
This is no where near over, and we haven't even finished the 6th month mark for Trump.

The 76,000 number is a slight under estimate but only relates to the miners themselves and not the industry itself. As he says, some towns are central to the coal industry meaning that virtually all of the jobs in those towns are a product of the coal Industry, this makes It hard to get an accurate figure for how many jobs it is responsible for by it is a massive under statement to say that it is 76,000. m8 - we could literally run the entire world on coal at the current energy consumption rate for the next 2000 years. The reason why we don't mine coal anymore in the UK is very simple - there's just so much of the fucking stuff globally that the market is too saturated. Australia itself is just one giant coal mine, and there's eye watering amounts of the stuff India and China.

At this point in time, we can synthesise oil from coal. The only reason why we don't reopen mines, is because of the Jews. Where's the oil found? Middle East. National Coal Association estimated that the coal industry directly and indirectly employs around 1.5 million people in 1994.

In 2013, there were 80,209 people employed in coal mining in the U.S.

Singh & Fehrs' 2001 analysis of Energy Information Administration data suggested that about 60,000 jobs in operations & maintenance are due to the coal industry in America.

Another of their estimates suggests that that coal transportation employed 30,757 workers in 1995.

In September 2011, the National Mining Association issued a press release stating that potentially 1.24 million jobs in 36 states had been destroyed by the Sierra Club’s “Beyond Coal” campaign aimed at stopping construction of new coal-based power plants.

The toxics rule would create between 81,000 and 101,000 jobs in the pollution abatement and control industry

In recent years coal exports and coal related jobs have been up in the U.S. and the trend appears to continue.

80,209 +
60,000 +
30,757 +
(81,000 + 101,000)/2 =
261,966 direct jobs not accounting for the trend of the industry icreasing, other aspects of the industry or indirect jobs. You see coal towns but do you see JCPenny's towns?

Byproduct of the oil industry. The heavy ends (coke) are sold to China which burns it for fuel because they don't care about the sulfur emissions.

This is one of the most confusing analysis I have ever read. You are using numbers collected decades apart. You are counting jobs that attempt to combat the negative effects of coal as coal jobs.(police + drug dealers = cartels good for economy ).

Coal is going to continue the major trend. A decline in the rate of decline is not a comeback.

I feel bad for people in the coal industry. Especially those without transferable skills. They make a good living in one of the last well paying blue collar industries. It makes sense that they would want those jobs to stay around, especially as these types of industry encouraged generational employment. If your father was a respectable coal miner and you are a coal miner, it is likely that your son is just starting his career in coal. If coal is no longer there to give your son a good job than your son will be very unlikely to enjoy the same quality of life in another low skill job especially without leaving the area. Coal is a way of life for hundreds of thousands of people.

We cannot save coal, but we can save these hard working men.

For every town the government kills because of coal regulations it should ensure the quick transition of the employed population to a new more economically viable area/industry.

Nah. Coal costs more per kw/h of energy than renewables nowadays; it's not the 70s any more where it took covering the entire roof of the White House in solar panels to light a couple of bulbs in the Oval Office.

Coal is dying because it's dirty, it's expensive, and nobody wants it any more. Renewables are taking off because they're the opposite. It's the Invisible Hand of the Free Market working right in front of everyone's eyes.

Just making fun of Trump for goofing around at his rally, making fun of towns for taking pride in their livelihood, making fun of a CEO for caring about his workers and for having a funny accent and mannerisms. What exactly did the redcoat prove here? If anything he's just proving that there is a real agenda to undermine American industry. His """punchlines""" are just mocking the fact that blue collar Americans want their livelihood back. The facts are that the federal government via the EPA has systematically strangled the coal industry. The left is mad because Trump lifting the restrictions is going to prove how much the government has been suffocating our own industry and unnecessarily driving up energy costs.

Nobody needed to strangle the coal industry, it's just dead because coal is dirty, inefficient, and unnecessarily expensive to prop up compared to natural gas, even moreso compared to renewables that the entire civilized world is shifting towards

Technology for coal has increased massively. Its much cleaner and efficient than it used to be and theres enough to power the entire US for 1000 years. But why are you so afraid to let it compete? If it was really a dying industry it wouldn't need to have loads of EPA restrictions that prevent the industry from doing anything. Free the industry and we'll see what happens. Im betting that the left's narrative against coal is going to blown out of the water. Just a couple weeks ago the first coal mine was opened in about a decade just because Trump is lifting restrictions

Solar and wind are only successful when propped up by monstrous sums of government money and when government regulation is wielded like a club against fossil fuel industries.

CO2 is a pollutant you fucking moron. Sure it's "plant food", but when you have one dude sitting at a table in a restaurant and the waiter brings out all of the food contained in the kitchen and puts it on his plate, it isn't reasonable for you to think he'll eat all of it, and the stuff leftover will rot and smell and destroy the restaurant.
>>
>>130704539

yeah sure its just 99,999999% of life on earth has thrived with higher co2 levels than we do now but ok everyone is gonna die right?

Wind/solar is a meme shilled by the oil industry.

Nuclear is the only realistic option for carbon-free energy, but thanks to anti-nuclear propaganda by the oil industry we've done fuck all for developing new reactors in the last several decades.

What we need to do is move towards domestic coal/gas/oil in the short term. That will provide cheap energy as well as put pressure on foreign states who rely on oil exports.
The cheap energy will give a boost to the economy, which we can use to invest in developing next generation fission reactors for the mid to long term future.
Fusion is an option too, but it's still a long ways off compared to Gen IV fission reactors.

Unfortunately Trump hasn't indicated much if any push towards fission development, but his move towards domestic coal is a start.

Because its dangerous work that is slowly replacing people with robots to the point that cubic ton percoalshill has never been this high ever along with the output. aka with less peeps we get more coal. There are no jobs to save or any rules needing to be changed. Coal power is on the way out. Stop beating a dead horse. Either way miners will lose jobs.
>>
>>130707455
You commies are really embracing this tumblr automation meme. You have any idea how expensive machines are? It's all well and good when you can't stand them in a line under a factory roof, but something that requires mobility and working in semi toxic conditions? Kek. Much easier to pay some guy $7 an hour
>>
Few of us care about coal and recognize its a voting block trump was targeting.

There is no way coal can compete with natural gas. Its too cheap and abundant and easily transportable.

>>
>>130666751
It's because it's the big oil companies funding a lot of climate change research, this is fact. They do this to ensure that the results show that it's coal industry that's the problem, and not big oil.

Yes we have automated coal mining. I personally have family still buried in mines. Those machines require workers to maintain them. The machines are built by people for the coal industry. The railways that move the coal are maintained by people. The coal power plants have people maintaining them. All the industries spur off restaurants and other businesses that service the industry. Construction workers build homes for people that work in the industry. Where are the jobs?

Also where do you think solar panels come from? They don't appear out of thin air you know. It's an extremely toxic manufacturing and mining process to get the elements required for solar panels, much worse environmental havoc than any carbon based operation

Ignoring the concern shilling, running a whole country's power grid on one particular energy source is moronic, diversified energy sources are needed. I'm more concerned with energy independence and giving people jobs than the merits of coal. And this 'retraining' meme is soft-brained, the countless articles I've read about 'why don't we retrain 40 year old coal miners to become white collar software developers' has no grounding in reality and is so idiotic that it doesn't even warrant a proper counter argument

Louder with crowder explkains it pretty good, ill recap for you.

So first off, solar and wind is VERY unreliable, and is tax subsidised way too much : its far more expensive because of this.

Second, coal being used less was because obama put in choking legislation to crush the coal industry

Third, we will have to rely LESS on saudi arabia, and can make american jobs.
