The empire state building is concrete with a steel skeleton.

The twin towers was basically all steel except for a concrete center column where the elevators were. The elevators were knocked out of service showing at least some damage to that center column. Most of the load bearing structure of the WTC was those outer steel walls.

Those outer steel walls were heavily compromised by the plane impact thus weakening the structure. The impact of the plane also blew fire proofing off some of the floor trussing making it further susceptible to fire.

Then you have the fire burning at 1000-1100c for over an hour. What these fires did was case the floor trusses to lose most of their strength and start sagging and pulling inward on the outer steel walls casing an inward bow.

Once these outer wall broke you then had 40 stores of building moving downwards pancaking lower floors leading to total collapse.
