Why would they torture him though, when he is still a nice little bargaining chip in possible negotiations (and propaganda)??

Isn't it more plausible that he just tried to kill himself after his sentence, for example by trying to hang himself or by drowning himself in the camp-pond or whatever? And they found him and tried to keep his american ass alive, but shit we're losing the white piggu, let's send him back asap so he at least doesn't die inside our borders?
