1) Both China and Russia benefit from NK acting as a buffer between themselves and US client state SK. They will be very angry (especially the chinks) if Korea unifies and becomes a powerful American ally right at their doorstep.

2) NK has nuclear weapons and a massive army. If backed into a corner, they could decimate the US forces stationed in Korea and flatten Seoul before reinforcements arrive.

Nuclear deterrent maybe? An outright war with North Korea would be costly and would be full of casualties, coupled with a refugee flood into South Korea. It would overall just be something that would accelerate the decline of the West, honestly.
