90% of college degrees are memes. I just graduated with a bachelors in IS which according to my Uni's stats was the 3rd most high paying degree and one of the most in demand degrees offered. I've applied to 150 places in the past few months and have done 5 in person interviews and still haven't landed anything and the positions I interview for start at 35-40k for people without experience as opposed to the 55k my uni said was the average I got jewed.

You know, many moons ago I would have called OP a faggot and said trades are a viable skill, but honestly these days it's hit or miss. I work retail at a home improvement store and the amount of people that come in that do all the shit themselves is really mind blowing, because nowadays all the stuff that you used to call a plumber or electrician for you can just go on to YouTube, watch a video, and do it yourself. The only time you really need tradesmen now is if you're doing actual construction and building a new building or something, otherwise the days of the handyman are coming to an end.

Depends on the degree

Trades are far more useful than libtard arts or ----studies. If you're not going for a useful degree like engineering or sciences etc and are going for s useless libtard degree you're literally wasting your money and are heading for a job at McDonald's if you're lucky

You mean high paying trades where most people end up being debt free and running their own business by the time they're 35? Seriously, try hiring a welder with a pressure ticket for any less than $80/hr.

I mean what we really need is more baristas and fry cooks holding a $45,000 piece of paper for a field of study that is either completely saturated and you work for peanuts or outright doesn't even exist anymore. You would think that after spending so many years in academia they would at least clue in that, outside of most STEM majors, what they're essentially doing is burning money to become self righteous assholes that are no further ahead in the job market than high school dropouts.

I don't think it's about dissuading people from going to college but about making sure people are aware there are other options. The attitude in the US is that if you don't go to college you are destined to be a failure for ever and ever and that simply isn't true. This leads to an enormous amount of people going to universities who really shouldn't be for financial or intellectual reasons. I have a friend who was so drunk and stupid during his college years he honestly struggles to remember what his degree was even in and continues to work food service. People like that exist all over because of how toxic and wrong the culture about higher education is

The cure for that is starting your own business. My grandfather charges 100/h as an electrician and is definitely on the cheaper end for our area. I've worked with a welder who charged 200/h and always had work.
Sure, an in demand STEM degree is usually better provided your grades are good and you have internships, but not everyone want to/can/should do that.
>>
>>130587203
Information Systems? Man I was majoring that but I realized holy shit I'm literally learning nothing. Sure the two programming classes were challenging but Telecommunication Networks was like a half asses run through Network+ and Security+. Taking that class will teach you basically nothing and the degree is like 8 or 9 classes just like that. Why don't I just study for the certs directly? For $1300 it's a joke that you only learn how to memorize the required concepts that are purely abstract to you. I had no confidence that I would be able to get a job in IT after that and nobody told me about CompTIA back then. I just think for the proves colleges charge they should be teaching you marketable skills and handing you certifications because there's a lot of money on the line and everybody is there to get a job. .

The is decent pay for someone without experience dumbfuck, you think just because you have a degree they should give you 60k job? This is what dumbasses on both sides dont understand, is that you need both a college degree and experience to get anywhere. So take those 30-40k jobs, and in a few years companies would love you. You would have shown that you are educated and can work.
You remind me of the faggot ass friends I went to college to get a criminal justice degree with (yes pretty useless but hold on) Basically they all had dreams of going FBI, Border Patrol/Customs or any of the cool Federal agencies. Each time police departments or correctional departments came around looking for recruit they will look down at them and refuse to apply when I will tell them to.
>Shit I aint trying to be a cop, I want to go FBI bro
Because God forbid college graduates get a blue collar job as a police officer instead of a prestigious job as a federal agent. I had 3 years in the Army infantry and still applied and become a cop as soon as I graduated from college. Because I knew I needed the experience in LE to get to those federal agencies to even look at me. Shit I could of just used my Military experience and college degree to get there, but I was humble enough to start from the bottom. I am a Border Patrol agent now and my dumbfuck friends still unemployed because they refuse to work anything that is not their dream job that pays 70k a year or barely starting to work in jails or small town police departments when if they had done that while in college they would of had 2-3 years of experience as cops or prison guards to go along with that college degree. They would of been on their way to those federal jobs they always wanted. Take those 30-40k jobs dumb faggot. Degree + Experience = Those jobs college promised you

How many positions are there for "college educated" work, Anon?

"Lets ALL be neurosurgeons!"

The idea people have is that "college education" is a skills training program for "white collar work". You pick your degree, say, engineering, and hey presto you are an engineer.

This is not how it has ever worked. This is literally survivorship bias. "This guy gets paid 200k a year and HE has a college degree!!". Plenty of taxi drivers with masters degrees.

The quality of college education in the US is woeful. People getting arts degrees in the 1960's were getting a far higher quality of education.

Education should never be about specialisation, unless there is a specialised skill that is required.

As far as your so called "dead end careers" - until we no longer need plumbing, we will need plumbers. The required plumber to population ratio is somewhat more favourable than the neurosurgeon to population ratio.

>why are conservadumbs trying to dissuade people from getting a college degree to pursue miserable and dead end career paths like plumbing and welding.

Look at the numbers. Salaries for college grads are dropping like a rock, and the cost isn't worth it anymore for most people. Plumbing and welding are hardly dead-end jobs, and you don't have to spend $100k to get your foot in the door.

We need labor unions and apprenticeships again.
>>
>>130602413
Hispanics dominated the trades a long time ago.

Blacks? Never work, as usual.
>>
>>130586534
>trade jobs are dead end jobs

What?

I started out as an electrician's apprentice and worked my way up to running jobs, then managing projects, and then learned Excel and AutoCAD and started designing warehouses for my company. After a few years of that they sent me to school to learn how to program computers and other microprocessors and also had me start managing the IT side of warehouse installations and operations.

I now do project engineering and project management for a multinational company and travel all over the world for work. They fly me around first class, put me up in 5 star hotels, and provide local interpreters and rental cars because I can get jobs done on time and under budget.

But yea, go ahead and dismiss the skills one can learn in the trades and the career these skills can launch.

You applied to 100 internships and got none? You need to work on your cover letter game.

Also, LinkedIn won't be optimally helpful until you've got a few years actually working with people, but right now it should look like an amazing resume because people look at that shit before deciding to interview. Even if you don't have much experience, you need to make it impressive. It's tough but if you're smart you can do it based on your studies and concrete (if exaggerated) accomplishments.

Also I cannot stress enough how important it is to get to 500+ connections so you don't look like a loser with a specific <500 number listed. Just add everybody from your college and random alumni. Even if it's obvious you're afredh grad people will care. To help pad it and make connections join LinkedIn groups focused on your area of interest and meet people there. Post interesting content and articles and your contacts will see them.

You need to find a good company that wil continue training you, and also set you up for a Refrigeration Apprenticship. Dont go looking for the highest dollar right out of school, look for training/benefits/apprenticship.

If you dont mind working hard and getting dirty, and dont forget using your brain and learning new things every day...I would say you made a good career choice and you should be just fine, good luck.

Electrician here, it beats retail or low-level office work. Pay is not too bad but I do agree that the goal should be STEM, finance, oil/energy industry, automation etc. Another great thing about the trades is that they are automation proof. The point is that not everyone is going to go to college and this is a good option if that is the case. Get a VALUABLE degree or go into a trade, that is generally the choice one should make. There are exceptions.
>>
>>130606593
That depends.

You have two life-paths: one with children (family), and one with not.

Family: You further the human race and enjoy an experience and connection that you never knew could exist. Conversely, you are eternally poor, unless you've got money.

Without family: Plenty of money and free time, but without any connection to the future, and a gnawing aloneness.

Better for men: late twenties.
-- Women clamoring to get married to have children, and lower their standards to realistic levels.
-- A man's value goes up as they age.
Worse for women: late twenties.
-- Same reason as stated before (see childless suicides).
-- a woman's value goes down as they age.

>Real Turing AI is just a few years away.
It's really, really not. This basic idea has been spun around since the 90s when people thought programmers would be replaced by barely-educated laymen using beefed-up development environments to simply stick code together like Legos. In just a few years! Always just a few years. That obviously didn't occur.

Neural networks and machine learning are incredibly interesting and useful, but they're not about to replace programmers. Not for decades. The technology always sounds incredibly promising, like a silver bullet, from uneducated people from the outside, but I worked as a CS researcher while in university. I worked specifically with machine learning. It's nowhere near the capabilities you think it has. Most of it is going to be supplementary for a long time. Paralegals have more to fear from it than anyone else.

Honestly, you just sound like a butthurt dropout. You never obtained a useful degree or training, have no real education, and have no employment prospects so you project your impotent anger on every other field. After all, you'll be vindicated when those programmers lose their jobs to their own creations.

Don't bank on it.

Hahaha. I make bank. I am not "rich" by any standard. I do work whenever I want, and get paid how I want.

I started a project with a local contractor 3 weeks ago in the middle of the week. As of my 2rd paycheck I had grossed $8300. Granted, this is working loads of hours. I have a few more weeks of it, as they gave us a 4 day weekend to decompress for father's day. I will be back at it another month, and get another 4 day weekend.

Why do they push the labor meme? Because in skilled trades you enter an apprenticeship. You get paid decent to learn a skill. As your time goes on you will make more. Apprentices where I am make 50% just starting out, and it goes up to 75% their last year of being a kid.

I get double time/1.5 time and other perks, and am not salaried. I don't work for one contractor, I work for myself at all times.

I spent 4 years getting paid to be trained. I spend every moment since fine-tuning my skills and increasing my paycheck.

It is a very enjoyable career.

How much does a plumber make in San Francisco?
>>
>>130586534
The question is why jobs like that are considered dead end and miserable while paying shit. I at least enjoy working with my hands, seeing the outcome of what I did in front of me, and the gratification of hard work like that. I have no urge or want to do paperwork in a corner office to make 100K+ a year. I'd be content doing janitorial for an office, or school, or whatever, if it was remotely possible to raise a family on that wage.

But it's not.

>>
>>130610466
It varies a lot, depends on what your doing and who you work for. If you do residential shit like houses and apartments you will always make less than a commercial industrial plumber (someone that builds factories and office buildings type of stuff). Or if your self employed you can make a fuck load of money. I do side work sometimes and I can clear like 2k for doing 5-6 hours worth of work. Also you always have to keep in mind certain areas have different costs of livings which directly affects the average income in that area. Thats why i said earlier 50k a year in the south is a good amount because shit down there is cheap AF. While in places like NYC,MA, parts of Cali 50k a year sucks because shit is more expensive in that area but that generally means people will be making on average more money in that area. It all balances out. Theres a lot to it.

Being in the trade is very fucking useful and you can make a shit load of money. My buddy is an electrician and he clears like 170K yearly. If anyone ever tells you its a "dead end job" then there clearly talking out there ass.

There all pretty easy to get into. Open a phone book and find a contractor, or go down to your local union hall and sign up.

We have apprentices for a reason, You learn as you work. Some schooling is required because the state wants to make sure there isn't some retard running around working on peoples houses.

My recomendation is plumbing, electrical, or become an Ironworker/welder.

Take this warning, Some days it can be hard as fuck and you might want to throw up and quit but dont be a little bitch, We usually know whos going to make it and who isn't based on how they can represent themselves. If you come in sagging around and complaining 24/7 like a bitch it wont do you any good.

Its hard labor, Its not always easy but we can handle it, that means you can too.

What do you think that pic is? YOU are generating training data for Google's deep neural networks.

You must have left your 'researcher' job in the 90's, because you clearly are unfamiliar with current tech. That you would equate 20+ years ago with tech today is troll level ignorance.

Meanwhile, Google is CURRENTLY launching this tech to classify YouTube videos by political content...
