I wouldn't say an oldfag but been around in 4chan on-and-off since 2009.

I first started going to /b/ after my younger brother showed me a couple of funny screenshots and motivational poster memes from /b/ he found outside 4chan spreading around. I though they were really funny and started going to /b/ for a while. Back then, they were making racist/misogynist jokes, but the overal vibe was not conservative, but more centrist libertarian, there was more mocking of "dumb rednecks", George W. Bush and religion back then. I made a thread once where I called global warming a hoax and it turned into a shitstorm calling me a faggot as if I had called holocaust real on today's /pol/.

Then I moved on to /r9k/ in 2011-13. I think the roots of today's /pol/ are there, especially the memes about "normies", "redpill", "roastie", self-improval advice etc. which was not present in original /pol/ or /news/ that was basically Stormfront 2.0 with little variation.

Then I was off in some social media sites, but feminists started to annoy me in how much they defend muslims even after Cologne, so I came back to 4chan and found /pol/ which redpilled me further.

I wouldn't say that back then, it was better than today. Old /b/ was also cancer, just as today's /pol/. Key here is to learn to shift through the shit to find the pearls worth coming here for.
