Remember the first debate where he said no one cares about her damn emails, and then at all the other Democratic primary debates, networks would showcase quotes from candidates from previous debates in the intro, and other people would get things which highlighted personal policy, and Bernie's quote would be "No one cares about her damn emails!" That part was a well-coordinated scam to convince the left the two of them were close together politically.

At some point, Bernie started breaking this agreement. Presumably, he realized he might have a chance to actually win and got greedy, but he didn't realize Hillary had supernatural luck, such as the ability to win all coin-tosses. When she got too far ahead in non-superdelegate votes, he was made to kiss the ring, probably bribed. I think he also had an agreement as someone running on the Democratic ballot that he needed to transfer over excess primary campaign donations.

Bernie Sanders resonated with disaffected white families and the young. That was the exact demographic that won Trump the election.

Had that demographic been split even a small amount by Sanders being in the race, Trump would not have stood a chance.

Trump's victory was assured by low turnout "Bernouts" refusing to vote between Hillary and HillaryLite, seeing them as basically the same candidate. Turns out they were right, based upon Trump's actions so far.
