Man I've been hearing about the 'cut' version of Eyes Wides Shut for so long it always comes to me as an urban legend. I swear when I was a newfag making sense of the internets in the early 00s people were already talking big about this.

I've heard so much and so different kind of storys following the "original" version that I don't know what to believe anymore. I had bookmarked a link a few years ago in my PC of one article about this colaborator, some kind of producer who worked alongside him in which pestered that in fact the movie had been edited.

After all this years no new info has come up and its fading black. Maybe one day some new papers/scripts appear and prove me wrong.

I don't know man, I don't know. Maybe this is one of those things that snowballed so hard that it changed de facto the whole self-history. To be honest, you got it all. A movie which, by his own spirit, is tinfoil-conspiracy themed material, and then you got the mastermind of this marvelous piece of art 'die' just a few days after production.

Let's imagine some scenarios:

+Jewlywood bosses get tired of this kind of exposing, conspiracy-believers factory filmography of his and Eyes Wides Shut was the final straw. They saw, they cut, they got rid of the problem.

+The movie wasn't edited in any way. I'm sure that anyone who watches the movie a couple of times always find that something is missing; we all got that feeling of an incomplete narration, of unfullfilled arcs, of something that could've give a lot more from itself.
This could very well be intentioned, but that only helps the "unofficial" version by making it feel 'strange' to the public in the first way. Like a beacon screaming, "something's wrong here".

+Maybe it was all a tragic coincidence.

Maybe there was something damning and they cut it out and would have liked to scratch the whole project but it's a famous director making his first film in 12 years working with two of the biggest stars in the world so there was no way they could get away with it
Maybe it was just too long for the producers liking and felt they could cut without effecting the narrative
Maybe they cut in such a way that the narrative was changed enough that they felt comfortable enough releasing it
BUT I've read that the studio basically tried to bury the movie on its release, just fulfilling their bare minimum commitments to the audience

I'm with you, I just don't know.
And when you look into it, it's hard to nagivigate through all the tin foil and so many ppl see so many different things (an by product of great filmmaking)
But one thing I AM certain of, is that his films all share common themes and that he was trying to tell us SOMETHING.

Keitel and Jason Leigh, who were meant to be Victor Ziegler and the other whore got replaced. Rumors say that Keitel had a morbid sex scene that got completely eliminated and I've even read that he got fired by doing that very same scene which never aired -apparently because he cummed for real (method actor :D)-.

In all fairness, it is a very intriging film.

He was telling the world to wake up, to seek the truth out even if it means your death. The final scene in EWS the characters of Kidman and Cruise endlessly argue in the toy store. Going unnoticed is their daughter being kidnapped at the moment. Still keeping their eyes wide shut to the importance of life, our children, their safety, the legacy we leave behind. His legacy was to lead people to the truth.

On behalf of the novel yes he basically gave fuck-all about it, he just looked for a good story and presented his view/interpretation on the big screen. Trying to take the novel to make reason of the film is absurd.

As for the romance flick, I don't know what to say. Yes maybe producers and businessmen wanted that but why didn't they force it tho? The end result is anything but a romance flick, hell the relationship with the wifey comes out as an unimportant background of it.

Check out Room 217, it's such an interesting doc on The Shining.
I don't have my own in depth analysis of that film, but there are couple of themes in it that are in most of his films:
Child exploration and Mind control from powers beyond your comprehension.
These are subtle though. The child exploitation is not emphasized, but Danny starts to "Shine" after he's been abused (which we know from a background conversation the Mom had in the beginning of the film.)
So, it suggests - abuse leads to "mind control" or the ability for a foreign entity to come into your mind and do things you can't control (visions) This is suggestive of MK Ultra. Where they'd abuse someone until there mind breaks and than they could "implant" ideas (foreign entities) into your mind and make you do things beyond your control.

My guess is children. There's a scene where a young prostitute is involved and there's a stuffed tiger on her bed. At the end of the movie Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are having a talk in a store and the shelves are filled with that same tiger. While they're talking two old men (both involved in that "world") walk up, they might have had a few words, but then they just walked away with the daughter in a very casual/subtle manner. This was never explained and seems like a really weird thing to happen. I think either Kubrick slyly left this in or whoever was doing the cuts missed it.
