Early-to-mid 2000's was back when I was watching three random episodes of Digimon on old VHS tapes. It was a lot simpler back then though, definitely.

I have an autistic obsession with the cultural trends, aesthetics, and "feel" of the early 2000's. For instance, I started watching Scrapped Princess (anime from 2003) and found myself reminded of early 2000's Japanese fantasy (and, weirdly enough, early 2000's web design because of websites dedicated to anime like it).

I think it started slipping in 2005, but 2007 is when it became a hard division. The obvious culprits are the recession and the change in internet culture from smart phones and social media (remember when "link to Facebook" buttons were a weird gimmick popping up?), but I'm open to other possibilities.

Obviously 7th gen was starting up and cartoons were in a dark age except for AtLA (the present is a fucking goldmine by comparison), but those are constrained to their respective niches.

The 1990s feel lasted well into 2005, even then the 2000s feel lasted until 2011.

CRT TVs were still being sold and used in 2010. It's only around 2012 that flatscreens became more common but all of the schools and old folks homes still use them.

I'd say Fall-Winter 2006 is when the feel of the early 2000s went away, when Pluto stopped being a planet, The WB changed into The CW (no more Saturday morning cartoons), HD started becoming the norm, Malcolm in the middle ended, Democrats won control of Congress as Bush's popularity reached record lows, Facebook opened up to everyone and not just college students, Sam Goody closed down, G4 turned into Cheaters and Cops reruns with not as much game-related shows, Wii was released and casual gaming gained traction, etc.

I'd say the 360 was more culpable gaming-wise, considering how the Wii had absolutely crippled third-party support.

2006 is fundamentally distinct from the early 2000's, but I still treasure it for its internet culture and the Haruhi boom.
