I disagree. Democracy, as it was implemented in the US, seemed like the best idea. Only land owners (i.e., those who had a stake in the country and its future) could vote. This avoids the welfare class voting to further expand the welfare state.

Social liberalism is only way forward that has the potential to actually benefit a large group of people. Mind you, that what it absolutely requires is a society that is collectively "well off enough" to realize that that most improving and beneficial change in their community would be to bolster up their lower class. Also, that which hinders it the most are capitalists who'd try to abuse it solely for self enriching gain.
